Ryan Scott is the smartest attorney and will not bow to the DAs that prosecute you. I was charged with several Measure 11 adult charges while I was a minor. I researched the best attorneys in Portland, and Ryan was on top of that list. He had a great reputation and extensive experience. After talking to several attorneys, I decided to hire Ryan. He is honest, kind and brilliant. He was able to reverse my adult charges and sent my case back to the juvenile court. This was a very hard case, but he was able to use his extensive knowledge of the law to win my case. He gave me my life back!! I would highly recommend Ryan to my friends and Family.

I was charged with some serious class A felonies (DCS in a school zone) while going to school to be a nurse. I was in a panic, because I knew that if I was convicted, my career goals would be dashed. After dealing with a public defender for a couple weeks I quickly realized that I needed to hire a competent defense lawyer if I wanted to resolve my case in a favorable manner. Things were not looking good. After speaking with Ryan, as well as several lawyers in town, I noticed the difference was night and day. When I dropped his name after calling one local law office, they even told me "We call Ryan when WE need advice regarding DCS charges. If he wants to take your case and you can afford it, hire him" Ryan responded to calls, emails, and even text messages after hours and truly went out of his was to act swiftly and decisively. Ryan took time to consider my wishes and advised me of possible outcomes while being reasonable and frank. He treated me with respect and honesty. I was looking at prison time at first, but with Ryan's help, I was not only able to avoid prison time but also get this felony removed from my record completely. When your life is on the line, and you want to hire the BEST, Ryan Scott is your guy! I can not express my gratitude enough for his services.

I write this review during the beginning of my case and totally unsure of what the outcome will be. Regardless, I know Ryan Scott will work as hard as he can to defend me in this case. Without receiving a penny, he met with me twice, spent time emailing and talking on the phone, retrieved legal documents and notified me of a new warrant! He has gone above and beyond to help me understand the legal process and prepare for the next step. I cannot stress enough how relieving it is to know I have him backing me during this confusing and scary time. Ryan clearly devotes all his time and energy to his clients and has shown me that countless times in our short relationship. I look forward to working with him on this case and HIGHLY urge anyone considering, DO IT! You won't regret it. He is extremely affordable and doesn't hide things in fine print like other lawyers I have hired. He set one amount, was very straight forward and flexible on when I could pay, and that was that. I have 100% faith he will do everything he can to help. He is very knowledgeable and I am lucky to have him representing me! Thanks so much Ryan. ***This was copy and pasted from a review I left on another site MONTHS ago. I am adding it here with a resolution as well because truly, Ryan saved my life. THE CASE WAS DISMISSED! I couldn't have done it without him. Ryan is such a down to earth, quick thinker who just simply knows his stuff and is willing to fight till the end for any client. 10/10 I would highly recommend, a million times over. Ryan is someone you definitely want on your team.

Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
