Sarah was excellent through every phase of my separation and divorce. When I encountered a situation outside of her expertise, she guided me to a colleague who got a great outcome. Needless to say, I was not always the 'happiest camper' to be getting divorced. Sarah remained steady regardless of my demeanor, consistently and calmly focused on the next point of business. And as each 'hurtle' approached, time and again it was cleared satisfactorily. Just about every component of my divorce settled in an acceptable if not favorable fashion. Communication was always good. Billing seemed fair. There is much to be grateful for having chosen Sarah for my divorce and how it all went.

I cannot express how grateful I am to have Sarah as my attorney. She is professional, thorough, understanding, and has always had my back. My divorce went to trial, and I wouldn't have been able to get through it without Sarah. I highly, highly recommend!

Sarah is not only an incredible attorney, but also an incredible human who cares about her clients and dedicates her time (weekends and late hours included) to make sure they are protected and supported. I came to Sarah after a horrible experience with my previous divorce attorney. She picked up the pieces and guided my through the most stressful and emotional year of my life. She helped protect my children and I from some pretty scary situations and I cannot thank her enough for that. She's honest, fair and supportive while also being fierce and fearless. She's kind and tough and can take on bullies in the best of ways. She's strategic and brilliant and helped me navigate so many tough situations. In the end, we were able to settle my divorce outside of court, which I thought was unimaginable - entirely because of Sarah's work. I am forever grateful to Sarah.

Going through a divorce is complicated and emotional. With Sarah Bond, I had an advocate, a listener, an ally, and an amazing lawyer. She helped me laugh, cry, and survive. I would recommend her without hesitation if you are looking for a talented and compassionate family law lawyer.

If you read all the reviews about Sarah, every word would be so accurate in describing this amazing attorney. Not wanting to repeat what has been said, here is my story about this wonderful attorney / person: I contacted and secretly retained Sarah, 3 months prior to filing for divorce. It was exactly 3 months when I had enough of the verbal abuse and made him leave the home. The next day, on December 27th, I called her to pull the trigger and file. She wasted no time and filed immediately. My husband and I owned a business together and I still worked at the business so things weren't going to be easy. The following two years were so trying in everyway. Sarah was there every day if needed, to kept me grounded and sane when I thought my heart and nerves were going to actually kill me. Her voice and words would calm me in a way which I could move forward. Sarah always made me feel as though I were her only client. Most divorce cases don't go to trial, but this one did. If you want someone to represent you in trial, it's Sarah! In my case, the team Sarah put together was so prepared, knowledgeable and respected within the court system because of their credibility and preparedness. Sarah Bond saved me in every way. She will work hard to do the same for you.

He made sure that i knew my rights, responsibilities, how the case would be handled, possible outcomes, and possible risks. Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
