Pros
1
Knowledgeable and experienced attorney who provides clear and accurate legal advice
“Mr. Trierweiler is a VERY experienced attorney with HUGE expertise in the fields of bankruptcy law and the surrounding areas that bankruptcy will touch in your life. His vast understanding is available to you; he has time to talk to you, and gives accurate direct answers.”
2
Compassionate and understanding approach, making clients feel comfortable and not ashamed
“Filing bankruptcy was a very painful prospect for me, and I was terrified of the ramifications. The folks at Todd's office helped me through it without making me feel embarrassed or ashamed.”
3
Responsive and accessible, with attorneys and staff readily available to answer questions
“I got all my questions answered and when I had more questions later, I tried to make an official appointment with him and he still just answered all my questions over the phone pro bono.”
Cons
1
Lack of direct interaction with the attorney, with many tasks handled by paralegals
“The way they treat their clients is terrible. Hardly any contact with the lawyer, fill out the bankruptcy questionnaire in office with a paralegal, which leaves no time to prepare the necessary information to give accurate answers, sign paperwork with a paralegal, questions answered by paralegals.”
2
Concerns about the quality of service and attention to individual client needs
“Paralegals cannot give legal advice. As a client, I should be able to speak directly with the attorney for getting questions answered and certainly when signing the court paperwork.”

I googled a question to begin, and the Trierweiler name was in the list. I was impressed with the fact I could chat with someone and ask a question, then before we were done getting my contact info for a call back, my phone was ringing. Jerry was on the other end, he helped me understand the issues I am experiencing. He was kind and very helpful, within minutes I understood my problem. We hung up and I set my phone down only to have it ring again with the same number for the Trierweiler group, I answered the phone, only to find that a very sweet paralegal was returning my call from the chat. She was very nice and we chatted for a few and I really appreciated the way I was treated, and how nice all these folks were. I wish them all a Happy Holiday season! Thank all of you.

Filing for bankruptcy was the first time in my life I had ever needed an attorney, and Todd's team made the entire experience extremely smooth. While his team still helped with odds and ends throughout the process, Todd himself took the time to explain in great detail what to expect, and in a way that made sense for me and my wife. I never once felt ashamed or embarrassed to go through the process, despite the financial troubles that got me to BK to begin with. They explained all the out-of-pocket costs, made plans for me so I could make installment payments for both the courts and my attorney fees, and kept in touch with me at each stage so I knew the status of the process. As someone who has worked in service-related industries (restaurant, banking, insurance) my entire adult life, I notice the small things ... and I am forever grateful for the empathy and compassion they showed while taking care of my case.

Todd was very kind, did not ignore that I lost my mother before giving advice and rolling into law. I appreciated that, it helped establish rapport and made it easier to talk with them. I was referred to Todd Trierweiler from the Probate office in Multnomah County, I am so thankful to have consulted with them they left a open invitation to return.

Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
