After less than perfect experiences in my custody case I reached out to Kaori. From the second we met I felt it was a good move. I just didn’t realize yet how good of a choice it really was to have chosen her to represent me. My children are finally truly safe!!! & that feels so good to say after a five year battle! I would recommend her with the utmost confidence that it would be your best choice!

Kaori is a great lawyer and worked really hard on my behalf when I was getting a divorce. I had met 3-4 other lawyers before her and felt like she was the only one that really cared and listened intently when we met. Throughout our time together, she knew how to best communicate with me when I was feeling frazzled and was very patient when I need explanation. I felt like we were a team -- I knew my history/situation and she knew the law. As a result, we worked well together to make a strong settlement case. As things got more intense, and I often got overwhelmed, I was really happy to have her in my corner. She is calm, focused, smart, very capable and kind. I can't recommend her highly enough and am happy to speak more on the phone if anyone should want to know more.

I’m so grateful for being here in Oregon and having Kaori Eder as my attorney. I’m Japanese and so is my ex. I believed I had to follow the Japanese divorce law, which would have worked too well for my ex. It’s Kaori who told me that I could file my divorce case here in Oregon. She is not only a calm, cautious, knowledgeable and very professional lawyer, but she also worked like a psychologist. She often took me back to a proper path whenever I got lost. She stayed focused until the very last moment in many situations including deposition and mediation, which I didn’t find from the opponent counsel. I especially appreciated how she summarized letters from the opponent counsel when the letter was full of complicated matters. I still remember when she advised me to take a deep breath before I read the proposal letter from the OC because the letter was full of things that could cause grief. Thanks to her, I was able to be well- prepared before I read the letter. Her advice worked like a charm. I don’t know if she does this for every clients, but thanks to her, I believe I didn’t make any big misconceptions caused by a language barrier. Her words and attitude towards me were full of compassion, so I was not alone during the hardest time of my life, thanks to her. She converted my negative power to a positive one and pulled me up from the chaos. I’m fully satisfied with the outcome and I’m happier than during the last three years while my ex was betraying me by having a Japanese mistress who has her husband in Japan. If I had not found Kaori and had followed Japanese divorce law, my future would have been a miserable one with a small amount of division of assets.

Kaori was calm, collected, and compassionate in the face of some horrible circumstances for me, and she was my ultimate advocate. She presented best-case and worst-case scenarios, as well as informed me of the long-term consequences of certain decisions and my actions outside of and inside of my case. Yet the ultimate decisions were left up to my judgment, for which I was grateful, since I would have to live with the consequences of my judgment. The details of my case had never been tried before in Oregon, and she worked tirelessly to source similar cases in other states so that the judge would feel certain facts were relevant and want to force disclosure from the person I was married to (who was refusing to disclose foreign assets, family gifts, and credit cards). She was the only person I could find who was an expert in international family law - crucial in my case to advise me on all the pertinent international issues - and an expert in the culture I was dealing with. As an advisor and advocate I couldn't have found anyone better, and she worked to ensure a positive outcome in my case despite extremely difficult circumstances. I can't recommend her highly enough!

Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
