Tabitha Brincat and her entire team did a phenomenal job for my stressful divorce/custody case. We worked together for 10 months and throughout the entire time I had nothing but the absolute best care! She is focused, friendly, incredibly competent, and knew every detail of my complicated case the whole time. She is a great listener and really made me feel like we were a team in making decisions when that was appropriate. When we had to go to the court room she was calm and explained everything so well to me. It was a horrible and scary time for me and every single time I contacted her office someone was there to listen to my concerns, answer my questions, and guide me with their knowledge. When we were in private mediation she stayed so calm and always knew what to say. I was very impressed how she remembered every detail of my complicated case even though she has other clients. I felt seen and heard throughout the whole process. Her entire team worked so well together and whoever I was working with was knowledgable, competent, kind, and patient. I would absolutely recommend Tabitha Brincat (and her team) to anyone that I know, especially if you are dealing with an aggressive ex husband. Also, her writing of documents and emails to opposing counsel was top notch. Beyond impressed and forever grateful that she was able to work so hard for my case and help me get a fair divorce in place.

Tabitha and her highly skilled team went out of their way to take care of every detail in my case. They are kind, respectful and very helpful. I cannot recommend her enough and will be forever grateful she was on my team throughout a stressful case. She is knowledgeable, considerate and thorough. She caught things my ex and his lawyer were trying to sneak in and change without notifying us. Call and schedule a consult, her rates are very fair and she knows her stuff!

Ms. Brincat orchestrated two difficult cases for my family. Both had good outcomes. Tabitha and team are well organized, prepared, and kept us well informed, with communication and flow chart to keep us up to speed and aware of any materials we needed to supply. Ms. Brincat is Family Law and a real asset.

I don't write reviews to avoid being accountable to them however in this case there is a huge exception. Ms Brincat represented me in courts for three years. She is very committed, knowledgeable and honest person. I had a very complicated custody case that involve different elements including, not limited to, residency, international laws, refugee rights, asylum seekers, protection and multiple domestic and foreign courts involvements and judgments. I believe any other order legal firm will give up on my case because of the complexity, remotely located client and vast knowledge and expertise that is required for a such case. I think after multiple court hearings over the years Ms. Brincat managed to get us an exceptional ruling that is beyond our expectations. I highly recommend her services to everyone.

I worked with Tabitha during my divorce, and then later asked her to represent me during the custody modification of my children. She gave very clear guidance on how to proceed, what to document, and how to handle every issue that came up. She always had my best interest in mind, but always remained concerned about what was best for my children as well (even though they were being well represented by their own attorney). Ultimately we ended up settling at the last minute and avoided trial, which was not an easy task given the lack of cooperation by the the party. The outcome was absolutely the best one for my children. She was always responsive, knowledgeable, gave me realistic expectations and was very pleasant to work with throughout the entire process. I would eagerly recommend Tabitha to anyone who asks and would absolutely hire her again.

He made sure that i knew my rights, responsibilities, how the case would be handled, possible outcomes, and possible risks. Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
