I read the two negative "reviews", and I am simply laughing. They describe someone else, not this excellent attorney who first represented me in a case in 2007 (won the case, spent a year of his time on it), and is currently representing me on another case (another auto collision, the other driver again with a cell phone in his ear). Curt has become more than simply an attorney, and closer to a trusted friend with expertise in the world of litigation. He has guided me away from mistakes; he has tolerated my incessant verbosity (wasting HIS time); he has buffered my tendency to occasionally act in an impulsive manner; he has ALWAYS looked after my best interest. I trust Curt Kinsley implicitly, and recommend him most highly.

Avoid this attorney at all costs! I made the mistake of seeking out a consult with Mr. Kinsley after an accident and was extremely disappointed with it. His attitude was very superior and it seemed like perhaps he was having a bad day because he was highly temperamental. Lawyers like Mr. Kinsley are exactly why personal injury/auto accident attorneys have such a bad reputation.

Curt is currently my lawyer. He has been nothing but kind, caring and on top of everything considering my case. I can't imagine anyone giving him anything but a favorable rating. I've read other reviews and the one(1) negative comment I read does NOT depict the sort of man I have been exposed to since working on my case. I was surprised when I received a phone call from him after my surgery due to the accident. He didn't talk "legal matters" but only asked how I was doing. Another time, after he'd spent all day in court with other cases, he called me after 8pm to check on me and ask if there was anything I needed or was concerned about. This to me does not come across as a man who hates the world or needs to consider another calling. He is exactly where he should be, a man who truly cares for his clients and wants the best outcome for his cases. He's one of the kindest men I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. I'd recommend him to anyone, and actually I have already referred him to a few people who needed a real decent lawyer to represent them. However my case ends up, I'll know he did his best for me. Thank you, Ms. Angie E.

Not only would I recommend this lawyer but I have. He is more than trustworthy. He cares about the cases he takes on and gives 100%. After my accident, this lawyer ensured that I was treated the way I should be by anyone who was working with me at his office or with doctors treating me. He was attentive, returned all of my calls and didn't become frustrated when I'd call often to get case status. Ultimately, my case won and I received a more than fair settlement for all of the heartache and trauma my family and I endured. Him and his team are wonderful and because of this, I've decided to go to him with another case and will continue to in the future.

I went to Justin Baxter of Baxter and Baxter after an internet search, for help with problem with a debt collector. He treated me with respect and was very knowledgeable. He made sure that i knew my rights, responsibilities, how the case would be handled, possible outcomes, and possible risks. Although I hope to never be in need of his services again, If the need arose, I would contact him and his firm without hesitation. I would definitely reccomend him to anyone in need of help with a debt collector.

Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
