When I initially consulted Caryn I was lost. My co-parent disappeared with our son for three months. I thought that I wasn't ever going to see him again but Caryn reassured me that I would. She worked through difficult negotiations, answered calls while on vacation, and help ease my stress and anxiety with her kind and professional approach. Caryn was more than just an attorney, she was someone that I trusted and I knew was in my corner. Through her coaching I was able to stand strong and confident in the courtroom. But don't let her kindness and charm fool you, she's a fighter and she's willing to standup to injustices. I give Caryn the credit for presenting my case in a manner that awarded me full custody of my child. I can't praise her enough, if you're looking for a family law attorney then look no further.

I retained Caryn. Night and day difference! Where my previous attorney was inaccessible, made major errors and wasted my entire retainer in little over a month, Caryn was always quick with a response and reasonable with her fees while providing amazing representation. She was also quick to fix the errors my previous attorney had made (some of which could have cost me dearly). Caryn truly listens and fights for what you want, aggressively. She makes smart decisions that work to your best advantage, and handles herself with tact and grace in the courtroom while still fighting for you; exactly the presence that is needed. She was my rock through a messy divorce and custody case; where I had intense anxiety and never felt listened to with my previous attorney, I always felt heard and understood with Caryn. If you have an ex who is a bully, go to Caryn, she will not play around with that and give you the confidence you need to prevail in court.

Hiring Caryn to help me through my divorce was a godsend. Having been subjected to many threatening, insulting and manipulative emails from my soon-to--be ex, I was very intimidated when I first came to her. Caryn helped me to see through these tactics and set boundaries. Caryn is a great advocate. She kept the big picture in mind and helped me get the best result possible, financially. Her expertise and confidence were worth every penny I spent. Even more than that, working with Caryn helped me regain confidence in myself and my self-worth. With her sense of humor and fearless attitude, she was a role-model to me that I sorely needed. She was my back-bone while I grew a stronger one. That is priceless. I recommend Caryn wholeheartedly!

My divorce was rough, we didn't get along at all, and had no idea how to get this done. It was two tigers chained together. Caryn was instrumental in keeping lines of communication open as to where we were in the process, what needed to happen next, and was prompt at seeing to it that things were resolved for my benefit. She gave up no ground and proved to be excellent counsel. She will be on speed dial for this and anything else I may need in the realm of law she practices. Two thumbs way up!

Caryn was amazing from start to finish, especially at our trial. I could not have done it without her! Strong and confident, she knows what the priorities are and keeps her cool in even the most stressful situations, and plays her cards with perfect timing. We had lots of laughs and (excuse me) kicked butt in court! She kept me on track in terms of what was pertinent to say and topics that were not very important, and therefore, saved my life from many unnecessary stresses! I highly recommend her. You can not go wrong with someone who is personal and so professional at the same time! A +++

I went to Justin Baxter of Baxter and Baxter after an internet search, for help with problem with a debt collector. He treated me with respect and was very knowledgeable. He made sure that i knew my rights, responsibilities, how the case would be handled, possible outcomes, and possible risks. Although I hope to never be in need of his services again, If the need arose, I would contact him and his firm without hesitation. I would definitely reccomend him to anyone in need of help with a debt collector.

Ryan Scott is an absolute legend. I called him because he was recommended by a friend and gave him everything I had. He took it upon himself to contact the right people and figure out what my options are, all before discussing giving him a dime. Truly a man who cares about justice and doing the right thing. I can’t recommend him enough.

Jennifer has to be hands down the most amazing person I’ve ever dealt with in the legal world. I don’t know if I can find the words to express my gratitude for her. She was so professional, knowledgeable, understanding, and most of all she kicked butt in the courtroom. I would recommend her to handle anyone’s case in a heartbeat.

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
