I rarely write reviews; however, I want others who are looking for legal help to know what exceptional support I received from Scott Levin and Michelle de Supinski this year in settling my personal injury insurance claim. From my earliest contact with them, I was met with consideration and respect. When Scott met with my husband and me via Zoom (we live out of state), I was struck by how genuine and forthright he was as well as by his relaxed and, simultaneously, focused attitude as he guided us through the settlement process. Scott not only answered all our questions, but he concluded our meeting by inviting us to email or call him whenever we had more questions or comments (which we did). I'm equally grateful for Michelle's support: she notified us promptly whenever action was needed on our part, she always responded to our emails quickly, and she kept us appraised of the progress of our case. However, it was while reading the concise and compelling demand letter that Scott and Michelle submitted to the insurance company that I truly understood the extraordinary skill both of them had brought to my case. Their demand letter was so clear and compelling that I actually applauded as I sat at my computer. I was delighted when Scott called me personally to tell me successful the results of their efforts in negotiating my claim…in fact, the results were beyond what I could have imagined. Scott and Michelle are masters of their profession, handling me and my claim settlement with sensitivity and grace. I was very, very lucky to have encountered them. I expect you will be, too.

Scott Levin and his paralegal Michelle are amazing. Hands down the best experience in settling my auto accident case with the behemoth Geico. Scott is a very talented and passionate lawyer. Michelle is an incredible support for Scott. They communicate effectively and clearly. Scott was available for my questions, concerns, worries, anxieties, etc. He did such a great job of navigating my case and keeping me informed along the way. He really knows his craft and performs it well. I ended up with way more than I expected as settlement from my accident and that is all down to Scott’s expertise. I HIGHLY recommend Levin & Levine for all your personal injury claims! If I could I’d give them 20 ✨

I went to Justin Baxter of Baxter and Baxter after an internet search, for help with problem with a debt collector. He treated me with respect and was very knowledgeable. He made sure that i knew my rights, responsibilities, how the case would be handled, possible outcomes, and possible risks. Although I hope to never be in need of his services again, If the need arose, I would contact him and his firm without hesitation. I would definitely reccomend him to anyone in need of help with a debt collector.

Jennifer was court appointed to me, and I feel fortunate to have had her assigned to my case. Her investigator was such a positive player on her team. I was told that Jennifer was a “Bulldog” and would work hard for me. She did just that! Having serious charges I was faced with.. my gal got my caseDismissed! Honestly she changed my life!

I’ve never needed a lawyer for anything so I searched for lawyers near me that could assist with my needs, and Graham Fisher was the first one I looked at. From the first phone call, and then in-person meeting just a few hours later, it was clear I didn’t need to look any further. Graham is professional, kind, extremely responsive, and helpful every step of the way. I don’t believe I could have found someone better - I would definitely recommend Graham!

I hired Susan to help me with estate planning documents, a task that was long overdue. Susan and her staff answered all my questions, provided excellent service and I received the documentation in a timely manner. I would definitely hire Res Nova Law again (and will be doing so in the near future).

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
