I found Tanzosh Family Law after multiple calls to other attorney's in the area. Brenna was personable, answered my questions, and was very sympathetic and understanding during my consultation (divorce - mostly amicable). Her billing was accurate in time devoted to my case and I never felt she 'added on or made things longer' than they needed to be. Very fair in price and represented me very well. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing assistance in Family Law. Side note: She also decided to hire an assistant during the time I was utilizing Brenna's services. She is also knowledgeable, timely and efficient. Great team. Thank you for all you have done for me. I was so appreciated.

Brenna & Michael took my case a couple of years ago and it was complicated, and at the time very emotional with the circumstances and challenges. They got me in the right mental frame of mind with their support. Then we meticulously went through our options, and devised a plan. We reached a settlement that was fair and equitable for both sides which is all I could have asked. It didn’t get messy because Brenna & Michael were empathetic to the factors in our case. I’m forever grateful for the outcome. They are top shelf professionals that know the law and the reality. I highly recommend them to the serious person that desires a fair shake, and is willing to put in the time to get there. Sincerely, Jeff Johnson

Pros
1
Brenna Tanzosh is a knowledgeable, intelligent, and dedicated lawyer who is excellent at her job
“Over most of three years, throughout a contentious, difficult, nightmare of a divorce, Brenna Tanzosh frequently proved herself to be the most qualified lawyer in the room, and sometimes appeared to be the only one with definitive legal knowledge in court.”
2
Brenna is empathetic, caring, and supportive towards her clients during difficult times
“This law office helped me immeasurably in my mind in my emotions in my soul and my spirit as my advocate during a very difficult time of life. Brenna and Michael stood in the gap, answered questions and were strongly in my corner.”
3
Brenna is honest, ethical, and refuses to play dirty tactics, even when the opposing side does
“My favorite thing about Brenna was her refusal to play dirty and her preparedness. My guess is that she's never had to resort to playing dirty because she knows the law.”
4
Brenna is highly responsive, available, and accommodating to her clients' needs
“Wow, I had a completely different experience than another person who wrote a review. I am self employed and have crazy hours, and Brenna made herself available to me late at night, on weekends, and holidays. She even came to my home to accommodate me when I didn't have child care.”
Cons
1
Brenna may at times prioritize a quick settlement over fighting for the best possible outcome for her client
“Brenna had told me that had I gone before a judge for my divorce settlement, I could wind up with no cash at all and that the judge was unpredictable. I've since heard from other attorneys that this was bs. Brenna was upset that the settlement conference was happening during a family visit and I suspect just wanted to end the case quickly.”
2
Brenna may not always re-evaluate decisions or listen to client concerns after an initial ruling
“The month, came and went, and come to find out, Ms. Tanzosh had no intention of reevaluating the parenting time. My attorney told me that since I agreed to the decision that my only course of action was to hope my ex fails as a father somehow or take it to court in the future for a modification, which will then cost more money.”

I went to Justin Baxter of Baxter and Baxter after an internet search, for help with problem with a debt collector. He treated me with respect and was very knowledgeable. He made sure that i knew my rights, responsibilities, how the case would be handled, possible outcomes, and possible risks. Although I hope to never be in need of his services again, If the need arose, I would contact him and his firm without hesitation. I would definitely reccomend him to anyone in need of help with a debt collector.

Ryan Scott is the best defense lawyer. After our first meeting I knew for a fact that I was in the best hands I could be in. He’s very intelligent and what sets him apart from the rest is not only his expertise but that he cares a lot. I’m so happy that he took my case. He got me out of jail when the public defenders didn’t want to even try. Now I am not behind any bars. If you’re looking up lawyers to represent you, stop searching now and hire Ryan you will not regret it. Thank you Ryan!

Jennifer was court appointed to me, and I feel fortunate to have had her assigned to my case. Her investigator was such a positive player on her team. I was told that Jennifer was a “Bulldog” and would work hard for me. She did just that! Having serious charges I was faced with.. my gal got my caseDismissed! Honestly she changed my life!

After determining that the only viable option for us in a dispute with our neighbor, was hiring an attorney, we found Mr. Hammond thru search engines and reviews. Our choice to go with Mr. Hammond fit our situation well. Mr. Hammond had a very calming and reassuring presence, that helped greatly with navigating us through this process. He was honest with what to expect and came up with some very creative and resourceful options for us to consider. His knowledge and understanding was greatly appreciated. We would have him represent us again, if needed. S. Schroeder, Oregon

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

  10. Are there alternative ways to resolve my legal issue?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portland, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
