I have used Joe a number of times over the past 10 years, and have always found him honest, knowledgeable and very fairly priced. He has helped me with some simple things like contracts, but most recently in a very important battle with an insurance company. This is not Joe's specialty, but he provided my legal support for the first parts of my battle, then when things moved out of his level of expertise, he recommended that I hire someone else, that specializes in that area of law. I wound up hiring the best in the state, and they were both impressed and appreciative of the work Joe had done, and felt that he had helped set us up for success. I respect a person who is honest about their limitations and doesn't waste my money to pad their income. I, and friends of mine, have used Joe in his areas of expertise, and he is exceptional.

Mr Smith was honest, respectful and concise when he was representing me for my personal injury case, I'm very happy with the outcome of my settlement and his dedication to see my case through. I highly recommend Mr Smith for any issues you may have in civil litigation, personal injury, family law, or landlord tenant disputes.

He took money to prosecute the civil suit . He used some of the money to file suit and made sure they were NOT served in time. He didn't file until the last 3 days so that we couldn't drop the case and refile. He found out that we couldn't use ORLTA to prove the ownership of the structure that was illegal and responsible for the injury. This was in a mobile home park and the structures have to be in the written rental agreement. I didn't have a written rental agreement and that is on the owner's of the park but you have to use the Landlord & Tenant Act within one year to prove it. One year had went by and Joseph found out too late but decided to do his client wrong instead of telling me the truth. He knew l would learn in court what went wrong so it was easier to do me wrong. I didn't get the bad news for about 110 days. Joseph is shameful !

Erich Paetsch and his team was able to help me recover funds that were owed to me through a business contract. He and his staff were professional and did a fantastic job communicating with me. He was an amazing advocate for my company and I would recommend him and the staff at Saalfeld Griggs to anyone needing an attorney.

My wife and I recently met with Stephen Montgomery to discuss estate planning. He was friendly, knowledgeable and professional. While we ended up going in a different direction in terms of our estate planning we would recommend Mr, Montgomery to others. He was more than fair with us, he is active in the community and is compassionate. Please consider using his services.

I found Stephen to be extremely helpful and patient with me in navigating my Dad's Power of Attorney, Trust, and Will at a very difficult time in my parents' lives. He was kind, patient, attentive, and very knowledgable. I plan to see him again when it is time to set up my own estate paperwork.

Kevin Lafky was successful in my lawsuit for my wrongful termination case, against a billion dollar company represented by a top Portland Corporate firm. I had success on other lessor issues with the firm. Beyond what this firm has done for me, such an advocate for the underdog or counterbalance against Government abuse. Most lawyers are too affraid to help the community the way this firm has helped. I don't care what any website or political complaint says to try to soil this man's reputation, this firm is huge resource to the community and is a better place because of him, by virtue of calling out or prosecuting abuse and corruption that other's won't. This man is like a local modern day Martin Luther king, fighting for the community, by way of calling out nonsense.

All the lawyers in this office have my utmost respect. Not only are they excellent at what they do, they also care about their clients. The leader of this team, Kevin Lafky is increadibly knowledgeable in several areas of the law and fights extremely hard for all of his clients. I have hired this law firm on a couple of different occasions and have always been satisfied with how I have been treated.

..In the early part of 2014, I was searching for good legal representation to help me handle a particular civil matter. I spoke with a few attorneys, but Lafky & Lafky stood out and came HIGHLY recommended by the leadership of a well-known, world-renowned civil rights organization. From the beginning to the end of handling the situation, Lafky & Lafky conducted themselves in a professional, ethical and productive manner. Overall, I was pleased with the results and strongly recommend them to anyone in need of their services. If I should have any legal issues in the future, that are relevant to the areas of law that they handle, Lafky & Lafky will definitely be my legal representatives...

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Salem, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
