Ronald Downs handled my car accident claim, that has gone on for nearly two years, and has handled everything exceptionally. He's walked me through all of the best possible ways and solutions to handle my case through and through, and has always been extremely professional with communication. Although as professional as he is, Ron can be very laid back, and is great at maintaining equal energy with his clients. Ronald Downs is my first lawyer, and although the results of my case did not end well, he still stuck to his guns and did everything is his power to ensure that I got what I deserved, and because of that I was exceptionally satisfied with the outcome. I highly recommend Ron for his commendable efforts and assurance that his clients will, guaranteed, get what they are owed. Though he may be my first lawyer, if I have another accident in the future (hopefully that will not happen), Ronald Downs will be the first lawyer I will call to represent me in my case. Thank you for everything you've done for me, Ron, I appreciate it more than anything in the world.

I hired Ron to represent me in a Personal Injury Claim involving a Motor Vehicle Accident. He was there for me through the entire process from filing the tort claim to arbitration. His advice to "focus on healing" before focusing on the lawsuit was invaluable as it encouraged me to seek the treatment I needed. When the injury did finally resolve he was able to recover all of my medical costs and fair amount for non-economic damages.

Ron, did a great job of representing us on a business breakup. We also used him on a labor issue with an employee earlier in the year. I highly recommend Ron and we would use his services again if another situation came up

Ron Downs provided legal representation for me during a lengthy and complicated corporate non-compete claim and subsequent law-suit by my former employer. His thorough understanding of employment law and network of national experts help craft a multi-pronged defense which included researching and presenting the case using both Oregon and Kansas Law, the state in where my former employer is based. Mr. Downs represented me, first through the required mediation, and then through several settlement attempts which resulted in finalizing the suit in binding arbitration. His handling of the case was exceptional and was beyond my expectations. His preparation of the case and witnesses as well as the preparation of me for depositions and the arbitration hearing was far superior to what I witnessed of the legal team for my former employer. Mr. Downs reviewed issues with candor walked me though the case and educated me on the processes of the legal system. Always available for counsel, Mr. Downs guided me through the case and provided an ear to listen and support along the way. He is an attorney that went beyond what is minimally required to represent a client. If you are looking for a litigator that will be honest and upfront, who is excellent in the courtroom and who will go the extra mile for you I highly recommend Ron Downs.

I contacted Ron Downs after not reaching, what I felt was reasonable compensation after a fairly serious car accident. Ron explained the process to me, reviewed all the pertinent paperwork, and provided guidance as to what my next step(s) should be. After hiring Ron, he went to work and kept me apprised of what was happening every step of the way. He was able to secure a more favorable settlement for me. I could not be happier with the outcome. Should I ever need an attorney in the future, I would most definitely call Ron.

I purchased a used motor home and was promised it was in perfect working condition. It broke down the next day due to numerous mechanical problems. I was also told that is had been gone over by the mechanics and was told no repairs were necessary. Even though I knew it was used motor home, Adam Hanson was able to prove to the Judge that I was mislead and there was misrepresentation of the sales person and thankfully, I was able to return the motor home and get a full refund. This was an very unusual case, and thankfully, I had the right attorney that did a lot of work before the court date and won the case.

My son is new to the county we live in and it felt like he had no one in his corner until Mr. Walls stepped up. He is efficient and on top of the game. He and his staff are professional in every step and even though my family member is till litigating, I have full confidence in Mr. Walls to finish the game on top. I also will be recommending him and then some. All of this from a court appointment.

Mr walls took on my case as a court appointed attorney. Being as it is, plenty of stereotypes float around about court appointed legal advice. With him, though, i found that he was very punctual. Wanted to make contact often and keep me informed as to new evidencial discoveries. In the end, after a long legal batte, i got what i considered a "victory" compared to my original charges. I couldnt have asked, or payed for, better representation and i will continue to reccomend Mr. Walls to anyone in need in his area. He will keep you up to date on information and make sure that you know directly what the next course of action is, as well as communicate with the state on your behalf. Thank you for your help!!!!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Salem, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
