We (my husband and I) had the opportunity to work with Attorney Alex Gavriilidis at the office of Leahy Cox, LLC. His professional demeanor and knowledge of the law, he made it easy for us to understand the process of obtaining a living trust. The staff polite, professional and friendly making process smooth…we had recommended them to our friends and colleagues.

Divorce sucks! I just finished my divorce and Bryan O'Connell was very helpful and supportive through the whole process. I felt like I was always heard. Communication was good. The process is not fun but at least I felt like I had a good lawyer. Thank you Brian for being there for me.

My father died unexpectedly without any estate planning. His estate was spilt several ways and the process was difficult to navigate. He owned a home, multiple vehicles, several financial accounts and various other issues that needed to be ironed out. I hired Alex to help get the probate filed, myfather’s house sold and all of my father’s assets distributed appropriately. I didn’t realize going into the situation what all needed to be done. Alex handled everything and did so with the utmost sensitivity to the situation. Through the process I was impressed with Alex’s attention to the situation. The process took the better part of a year, and he always answered my calls and responded quickly to my numerous texts and emails. Alex’s knowledge of the probate and estate system was amazing. He seemed to always know what to do with every scenario and always knew what was coming next. I would unequivocally recommend Alex and will not hesitate to hire him again. My probate case number is Lane County Cir Court 23PB05495.

Long story short, after 15 months of made-up (false) noise complaints by my homophobic neighbor I pushed on Principle Property management (PPM) to deal with the issue. In doing so PPM issued a 24 hr eviction notice to me. I sought help and found Mr. Capp. He made time to see me right away. He reviewed the details and gave me clear concise information on how the legal process works in landlord/tenant matters. With that first visit, we made a quick strategy. Mr. Capp continued to provide his counsel and advice with leaving me to make the right decisions for myself. He provided very clear and heart-dropping details on the risks I faced with each stage of the process. He communicated with me on every step that was going on, and I felt well informed about what was going on. I appreciated that Mr. Capp would listen to the thoughts and feelings I was expressing with excited Italian hand gestures. He demonstrated the human side of the law in regards to my fears and anger with understanding and yet with a professional drive to represent this matter to the fullest. Joshua understood trial was costly and risky, even though I was ready to "Dam the Torpedoes" in this matter he sought a reasonable solution out of court (redirecting my anger). While I did not get what I WANTED out of this matter, he helped get me what I needed to be in control of my own destiny. I highly recommend Joshua Capp for the legal needs you may have that he covers. Mine was a landlord/tenant matter. --Thank you to all the staff as well, always with a smile and kind words.

My husband and I met with, and hired, Peggy to assist us with our adoption. We had never worked with an attorney before, and were impressed with her warmth and compassion. Peggy walked us through the entire process with patience and confidence. We are forever grateful for her time and services. Our adoption was finalized in 2016 and we could not be more pleased with the entire process. We highly recommend her. She is an excellent attorney and a wonderful person.

We had encountered a unique situation regarding our adopted daughter and a previous foster parent. Ms. Peggy Bond was not only knowledgeable in adoption law, but was a great advocate for ensuring every decision we made was for the best interest of our daughter. Issues with adoption are emotional. Parents may not be thinking clearly, nor know long term consequences of adoption decisions. Ms. Bond was honest, has outstanding support connections / referrals within the community, and genuinely cared about the future of our family unit. This case was 10 years ago. Now as we reflect on the decisions and court actions we made with Ms. Bond, they had been for the best for our daughter. We highly recommend her for all adoption situations requiring legal assistance.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Springfield, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
