In May of 2016, I consulted with Mr. Brooks on the possibility of him representing me at a hearing specific to a security clearance investigation being adjudicated on my behalf. He was very clear on his fee and was direct on what he would provide for me as my attorney. I hired Mr. Brooks, even after consulting with an attorney who 'specialized' in the type of hearing I was to have. Mr. Brooks was extremely professional and competent in the matter telling me exactly what I needed for him to proceed possibly eliminating the need for the hearing at all. In early September of 2016, I was informed by Mr. Brooks, and by the Department of Defense, that their need for clarification on concerns they had was satisfied, and a hearing was not required. I received formal notice from the DOD cancelling the hearing. I strongly would recommend Mr. Brooks and if necessary, would use his services in this, and other legal representation matters.

I was searching for professional advice on a business contract that I am about to sign. He went above and beyond my expectations in every way. As a business owner, I was pleasantly surprised from the very start when he contacted me on a holiday - Labor Day. When you own a business, there simply are no holidays, and I was impressed that he understood this. He examined the document I sent and pointed out things that weren't obvious to me until he explained them. This is exactly what I was looking for - someone to point out things that I would not have noticed as a lay person. At the same time, he also addressed items in the contract that I was concerned about and he explained all of my options. I felt like he was very knowledgeable and had a lot of experience in business and real estate law. Again, this is exactly what I was looking for when I searched for an attorney. When I've looked for an attorney in the past, there were hidden costs and ultimately, I paid a lot more for the services rendered than I was originally quoted. That was not the case here at all. On the contrary, he actually provided more assistance than I could have imagined for a price that worked for me. I hope to not need an attorney in the future, but that's unrealistic, so I am sure I will be contacting Michael in the future.

Peter was able to take a difficult family situation and make it a pleasurable experience. I took my parents to him for Estate Planning. They were apprehensive and anxious about the process. Peter was able to put them at ease and handled my family with the skill of a family counselor. Our entire family felt like we were in good hands. Peter's professionalism, knowledge of the law and warm personality made our experience stress free. I would highly recommend Peter Reiss to anyone in need of a great "Estate Planning" lawyer.

I cannot recommend Jackie enough! She made what could have been a stressful process feel seamless and easy for me. After many failed attempts with a previous attorney, I was referred to Jackie and am so happy she took me as a client. Not only was she incredibly professional, but her deep knowledge and expertise were evident in every step. She always had the perfect advice and her confident approach led to me winning full custody of my child as well as withheld support . On top of that, she was easy to communicate with and made me feel confident and supported the entire time. If you’re looking for an attorney who is both personable, professional and amazing in the courtroom hire her!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Doylestown, Pennsylvania?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
