I consulted with and then hired Attorney Brian L. McCarthy to represent my daughter in a criminal matter. I paid my daughter's bail, she was released, 4 days later she was re-arrested and locked up because her PO officer put a detainer on her. Attorney McCarthy was very professional and has a vast knowledge of the Chester County and Delaware County legal systems and the way they operate. He is very compassionate and caring, he visited my daughter several times while she was incarcerated not only talking with her but also with her Counselor and PO Officer. He also spoke with me numerous times on the phone and in person concerning my daughter's case. Mr. McCarthy displayed much concern for my daughter making sure that her voice was heard, and that she was treated fairly in the courts and that none of her rights were violated. He fought very hard for her before the Judges and the decision makers. He was able to get my daughter's detainer lifted and the case against my daughter thrown out/all charges dropped! I have much respect for Attorney Brian L. McCarthy, I would highly recommend him to anyone who needs an Attorney as I consider him my Attorney forever if ever needed!

Brian McCarthy has represented me for multiple criminal cases as well as traffic and civil cases in Chester County as well as criminal cases in Delaware County as well. Brian is one of the most brilliant attorneys and his professionalism shows in the court room. He is without a doubt the the best criminal attorney that I have ever had the pleasure to work with. I hired Brian McCarthy because of a very multiple complicated cases that other attorneys told me I had no chance of beating, let alone receiving time in prison. (which I never received) He has a reputation of being one of the best, and it shows with his professionalism in the court room. As well as his communication to his clients, and the piece of mind that he was able to give me through out the stressful times that situations like these cause. My end results exceeded my expectations by getting my whole case dismissed, as well as other countless out comes for other cases that he gave me results that were told to me by other attorneys that were impossible. I truly believe Brian is one of the top criminal attorneys in Chester county as well as Delaware county. Not to mention the more than 5 people I’ve recommend to McCarthy who he represents that had the same experience I’ve had, and for a few of those clients, they even ended up with same dismissal of their own charges, including high tier felony’s dropped to low tier misdemeanors! Brian McCarthy is the best, he’s brilliant, he really cares and always picks up his phone for his clients. And I will always recommend him to any one that needs help in this legal system. He is the real deal and the way he gives his best interest and I believe him, I have 100 percent trust in Brian McCarthy no matter what.

Brian was extremely patient and knowledgeable in assisting us as a family while working through the legal system for our college aged son. 100% accessible by phone, email and text and quickly responsive in calming 'mom' in many concerns I had. Very interactive at court with the judge and authorities and made a scary situation for our family more comfortable. In the end, we all accepted responsibility for the actions that drove us to court but the process of getting us through the court system was less stressful knowing he had all factors under control

I loved working with Liz and her team on my divorce! When I started out, I really dreaded all of the pity and somber tones I expected from everyone. However, Liz and Jessica were upbeat, positive and friendly, which made the process much better. The whole thing just felt like an inconvenience in my life that they were taking care of for me. I trusted them with the steps along the way, and to make the right recommendations for me. Liz went over the options, possible outcomes and likelihood of various outcomes. My ex and I mediated but each had representation. I felt very prepared going into mediation thanks to Liz's guidance, and walked away with a settlement that I was very happy with. Liz make best use of the hourly fee, found ways to minimize the number of times I needed to come to the office and got this process done super quickly. Highly recommended!!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Exton, Pennsylvania?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
