Tracy represented me in my Chapter 13 Bankruptcy back in 2016. I was 28 and going through a very tough time. I was in the middle of a messy divorce, trying to get my life back together and on top of that my (now) wife and I had just lost our daughter to a heart defect. Tracy walked me through the entire process with ease. She explained everything and ensured me that everything would be ok. I trusted her and she was absolutely right. Anytime I had a question about the case or just in general, she would reply within minutes NO MATTER WHAT TIME OF DAY. I think her ability as a lawyer as well as her compassion for her clients make her an above average choice in representation. More recently my wife and I are in the process of building a home (summer 2021). I am running into issues when it comes to underwriting. I had a foreclosure within my bankruptcy and I had to prove such facts. Long story short, Tracy is one of the reasons that my wife and I's mortgage ultimately got pushed forward in the review process. I haven't paid Tracy a cent in years, but she sill stuck up for me. She forwarded many documents to my broker showing that my information was correct. Again, the communication with her was in the evening and even on the weekends. She is so helpful! I couldn't have picked a better lawyer to help me through one of the toughest times in my life.

This lawyer....I just can't say enough about! Going bankrupt is not an easy decision, and by any means should always be the last resort. When it is the ONLY thing you can do, Look NO FURTHER than Tracy Updike! I already felt horrible over my predicament, and had been in contact with a overly popular bankruptcy company. It had gone as far as actually having an assigned lawyer. But I needed someone to help me access what was best for me, to be there to answer questions that were not so black & white, but pertained to my case, and situation. To help me see the big picture. I received anything but this with that other lawyer, who he and the company made no pretense to make me feel like a number. That's ALL they saw, a number that said dollar signs. I'm convinced in my heart had I gone with them, I would regret it now. When I would call ready to give money someone would pick up in 3 seconds...now call with a question....call wanting advice...yeah have a good time with that..... 3 times I called to give a check to hold, and 3 times I called back to cancel. After searching and searching the internet for someone who would just answer my questions, I...FOUND...TRACY! When I called, SHE answered. I quickly told her my story through tears, among this that I was broke, she didn't hang up on me or tell me she couldn't help. She had me to make an apt. And you see how on this site it says free 60 min. consultation? Yeah this compassionate woman met with me for about an hour and 1/2- 2 hours!!! And I hadn't hired her yet! She answered all of my questions, and needless to say I walked in still feeling like a low number, but when I walked out. I was a HUMAN BEING! My life was not over, this is NOT the worse thing that could happen. There is life after bankruptcy! And a lawyer can be compassionate, kind, very knowledgeable, and treat you with dignity. I knew leaving there that if it was my decision, I didn't have to look any further. That WILL be your experience with Tracy! Once I emailed her a question very late at night so I never expected her to answer. I kept forgetting to email her through the day, so only sent it at that time to make sure I got it out the way. To my shock, she emailed me right back that late!!! She never left me hanging. If she didn't get back to me immediately, she always does in a timely manner. She will honest with you and tell it like it is, but she will be there with you AND for you! And top it off I paid $500 less than that other bogus company was charging. When bankruptcy is the ONLY decision, Look no further folks!!!

Bankruptcy is a life altering experience. To have a highly adept legal counsel to steer you through the process and fight for you in the times when it becomes necessary, Tracy is a real warrior. I am just finishing out my Chapter 13 case in the Middle District court and she is an absolute blessing -- I HIGHLY recommend: Tracy L. Updike, Esq. Before I went to the law firm where she was staffed, I had filed for Chapter 13 with some "other" firm that apparently knew nothing about bankruptcy law and could quite possibly have had my case dismissed from the very beginning...failure to file certain documents, to be exact. Tracy is very knowledgeable and simply the greatest person to work with; very friendly, supportive, and a valuable asset to any firm she chooses to work with. A personaL note, "Tracy, THANK YOU for your expertise and delivery of great service!"

I can't speak highly enough of Chris' skills and the experience we had working with him on a complex administrative appeal. Chris demonstrated exceptional attention to detail and to critically analyzing the facts of the case to build persuasive testimony. He was extremely sensitive to the regulatory climate and to the importance of maintaining relationships with state agencies through the process. Chris' ability to be both a strategic thinker and quick responder makes him well suited to handle cases of all types. Above all else, he is a team player, unequivocally committed to excellence in his work and a tremendous asset to his clients.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
