Joanne has represented me and protected my interests in family court matters of marital property distribution and a child custody matter in which my wife proposed to relocate with my twin boys. From the moment I initially consulted with Joanne, her knowledge of and experience with family law matters in Montgomery County Pennsylvania were clearly evident. She is a consummate professional who anticipates and is prepared for all possible outcomes. In my profession I deal with attorneys regularly. When I requested a referral for a divorce attorney in Montgomery County from the lawyers I most respect, Joanne is who I was pointed to. After seeing her work first hand I understand why.

Joanne has been my lawyer for over 5 years. I've been very satisfied with her service. She has effectively walked me through the divorce process within the Montgomery County court system. I appreciate her knowledge of the Masters and Judges and she could always give me an idea of what to expect before heading into court. If you desire to stay out of court she also can help you along that path. She replies promptly and on several "emergency occasions" she replied to me after working hours. I highly recommend Joanne!

She tried to keep us on track despite very contentious circumstances. Her knowledge in custody cases helped us hang on, and her final advice in settlement brought a relatively quiet long term solution.

In 2012, I hired Joanne Kleiner to represent me in a custody matter. Immediately, she began to work diligently on my case. She listened carefully, and advised me accordingly. Joanne’s service went “above and beyond” any of my expectations. In fact, at one point, when an emergency court order was urgently needed, she personally got in her car, and delivered it. At the time, I thought this was unbelievable dedication. In the following years, I learned that this is Joanne’s normal modus operandi. When she represents a client, she gives it her all. My case was difficult and protracted, even going to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. At every turn, Joanne’s counsel was “spot on”! I’ve learned to rely on her judgement in the area of family law, and in life, in general. Joanne has represented me for over three years now. My sons and I have only benefitted from her representation. Joanne’s rates are very fair. Moreover, on numerous occasions, she has helped me in dozens of ways, without charging me a penny. Communication is one of the most crucial aspects of custody and child support litigation. In those times that I needed her most, she was always easily accessible. When I call, she answers immediately. Even when busy or out of her office, she returns calls in minutes or hours. Often, she calls on her own, to give me news and updates. Having been in business for several decades, I’ve had contact with many attorneys. I have never been more satisfied with any, as I have been with Joanne. Not only is she an absolutely top-notch lawyer, but also a true and sincere human being. I am fortunate to have Joanne Kleiner as my attorney, and more so, I like to think of her as my friend.

Me and my husband are very happy with our decision hiring Jeffrey as our lawyer. We had to deal with seller's non-disclosures and we didn't really know where to start. At first we had a consultation with different lawyer, who charged us 150$ for a 30 minutes talk, was very unprofessional and left us with more questions than we had before. After that we decided to get a free consultation with Jeffrey, and were so pleased that he spent over an hour with us and was able to explain everything in details, answered all of our questions and suggested the directions we should be taking to solve this case. So we had no doubts that he is the right person for our case. He handled entire process of a real estate litigation very professionally , and we were very impressed with how knowledgeable he is in this field. He was able to settle our case within few months and without us having to go though a trial process, which saved us a lot of time, money and made it a lot less stressful than it could of been. Thank you so much Jeffrey. We really appreciate your hard work and dedication.

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Jenkintown, Pennsylvania?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
