I contacted them after I was denied disability. I didn’t really expect them to take my case, but my family was pressuring me to at least try. Honestly, I only applied for disability at the insistence of my occupational therapist. I have bone spurs on my spine, ongoing frozen shoulder, an anxiety disorder with panic attacks, and possible neuropathy in my legs, but apparently I can still perform the physically and mentally demanding jobs I’ve always done…at least according to the disability determination letter. Anyway, my rating here is not because they wouldn’t take my case, but because of how the intake specialist, Martha, talked to me. I’ve struggled – physically and mentally – since I had Lyme disease in 2017. When I could no longer do my job, I had to take any other job I could get. Because of my anxiety disorder and physical limitations, which were not an issue before the Lyme disease, I have struggled to keep any job over the past few years. Martha very clearly judged me based on this, asking “have you ever worked anywhere longer than a year?” in an accusatory tone. Well of course I have, but it’s back a bit in my work history because of my disabilities. Her attitude started to increase my anxiety and I was on the verge of tears because I felt that she was insinuating I was lazy and useless. I used to be a retail store manager and now I struggle every day, mentally and physically. I’m sure she would feel different if she went from being the sole income for her family to barely able to leave the house because of a tick bite – yes, that is my ACTUAL situation. It was also clear that the fact that I do not currently see any medical specialists was a turn-off for them. One cannot see specialists if one does not have health insurance. And one cannot have a therapist when the “over a year-long” waitlist time frame is only in month eight. Still, I have seen several specialists since 2017, but none have been able to help me, so why would I continue to see them? Maybe I’ll apply for disability again after my upcoming nerve test for my legs, but I’m hoping that earning my Master’s Degree will help me land a job in a different career – one that isn’t so physically demanding. I’m used to being the provider and hate that I have to rely on others for help. Either way, I will never contact this law firm to take a case based on the judgment I received from Martha. One would think that sensitivity training would be essential when one regularly speaks with people with disabilities. Apparently not at Krasno Krasno & Onwudinjo.
