Pros
1
Responsive, available, and made an unpleasant experience as pleasant as possible
“She and her staff were always responsive, available, and made an unpleasant experience as Pleasant as possible.”
2
Aggressive and commanded respect in the courtroom
“She was aggressive and commanded respect in the court room. An attorney like no other!!!”
3
Supportive, knowledgeable, and fought for what the client wanted
“She was supportive and knowledgeable, and fought for what I wanted for my kids. She made an awful time much easier for me.”
4
Made the client feel like their case was a top priority and listened to their needs
“Abby always made me feel like my case was a top priority for her, really listened to what I was looking for, and helped me to navigate the process to optimize the outcome for my child and limited the contention that can typically arise in these types of things.”
Cons
1
Lied about filing paperwork and caused significant delays in the divorce process
“She flat out lied and said that she had filed all of my divorce paperwork, but after firing her and going to Family Court myself, I learned that she had never filed anything and had not even entered herself as the attorney of record in my case.”
2
Unprofessional conduct, such as not being available, not providing written agreements, and going on vacation without informing the client
“Also, instead of dealing with the charges she misinformed her client to get him to agree to continue... HE HAD NO CHARGES AND SHE CONTINUED IT! Most likely to get her greedy hands into the next charge in which she was to charge more but the first was paid in full and not yet dealt with... Not only did we have this horrible unnecessary experience. She was absolutely almost impossible to get a hold of by phone, text, email even Facebook. She has all clients paperwork. ALL ORIGINAL PAPERWORK no copies were made! Did I mention she failed to write up an agreement of services? What lawyer does not have some type of written agreement with their clients??”

I hired Abby after having a bad experience with another attorney, who made me feel like he did not value my input related to my child's custody arrangement . Abby always made me feel like my case was a top priority for her, really listened to what I was looking for, and helped me to navigate the process to optimize the outcome for my child and limited the contention that can typically arise in these types of things. Abby also went out of her way to meet me during times/days that would work for me given my nontraditional work schedule, which I really appreciated.

We had hired Ms Leeds for one of two cases. She knew the date scheduled for court but the morning of is when she decided to let everyone else know she had gone on vacation. Court was rescheduled and when I arrived she was offended I didn’t know her face and entire hearing discussed with her DA buddies what they were gonna do.... she knew nothing of her clients case which she had in her hands and looked at it like it was supposed to talk to her. She did not at all represent her client, I had to give her the death stAre or speak up myself to speak on her clients behalf. Also, instead of dealing with the charges she misinformed her client to get him to agree to continue... What lawyer does not have some type of written agreement with their clients?? We fired her about a month ago But we still try to call her for the inmate only proof of innocence alas, still No reply from Ms Abby Leeds. We don’t even know if she knows she was fired!! Completely and totally unprofessional in any and all standards and we will be contacting the Bar Association as well as others!

I hired Ms. Leeds to assist me in my divorce proceedings earlier this year. Sadly, working with her was one of the worst experiences I have ever had with a professional. I retained her to file paperwork in a simple, low-conflict divorce for me mid-March 2018. At the time when I hired her, I was told that the work would take her 3-5 hours in total and that she could have everything filed within a week. I paid her a $1500 retainer, but ended up having to file myself because, by mid-May, she had still never filed anything for me. She flat out lied and said that she had filed all of my divorce paperwork, but after firing her and going to Family Court myself, I learned that she had never filed anything and had not even entered herself as the attorney of record in my case. She refunded half of what I paid her, but dragged the divorce out for months longer than would have been the case had she done what she agreed to do when hired. The whole process was sad and stressful enough on its own without having the person who is supposed to advocate for you lying. It was awful.

I had a great experience with David Spitofsky assisting me with my bankruptcy, Anytime I needed to speak with him he would call back and assist me, without me having to call multiple times to speak with him, even with things others may have thought were unnecessary or annoying questions that I may have had, he never made me feel as if I was bothersome. He's always taken his time to explain any of the paperwork and procedures and kept me on top of everything that was happening with my case. I'm very grateful to have had him as a Attorney and would advise others to work with him as well. Hoping I won't need his assistance again but if so I will definitely use him again. Thank You David Spitofsky for all you help.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Norristown, Pennsylvania?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
