The laws that exist to govern and maintain order in our society can often prove difficult to understand, especially for one who is not trained and unfamiliar with the legal vernacular. My first significant encounter with the law occurred approximately 6 months ago when I was involved in a DUI accident that could have ended my life and that of others. Thankfully, I was traveling alone and did not suffer any injuries other than totaling my car (minor in the large scope of things). After my accident took place, I was a nervous wreck because I was afraid that I was going to lose my job, my professional licenses, and that my public persona would be damage from one night's dumb (and I emphasize "dumb") decision. I had no idea what my next step should be and my first instinct was to call an attorney. I have heard that getting an attorney for a DUI charge was a waist of money, but nothing could have been more to the contrary in regards to Mark Smith. From the moment I first spoke with Mark, I could tell that he was a genuine person and would help me through this. Even though DUIs occur frequently, I felt that Mark treated my case as serious as a multi-millions dollar lawsuit or an extensive murder trial. He never seemed impatient and always answered the phone as well as all my questions each time I called him. He went out of his way to make sure that I was calm and to assure me that everything was going to be fine, that I would not lose my job, professional licenses, or that my reputation would not be tarnished. Mark accompanied me to my preliminary, which I know many attorneys do not do for DUI cases. Perhaps the one particular incident that really stands out in my mind was during my ARD hearing. I remember sitting in the court room feeling lost and clueless to what I was supposed to do and what would happen next. I sat there for several hours and watched numerous attorneys come into the court room, find their client, mumble a few words, exchange a few papers, and then left for the rest of the day! The clients were left there all alone with a look of confusion on their faces. Mark, yet again impressed me. He stood by my side for duration of the hearing and explained every piece of paper that I had in front of me. He also answered questions from a few other people who sat next to me, which I knew he did not have to do. The above mentioned description of my account with the law and my experience with seeking out professional legal advice, is a minor representation of Mark A. Smith's exemplary and diligent efforts to ensure that each client receives correct and fair treatment.
