I hired this man and he assured me that I wouldn’t spend a day in jail and I did…he wasn’t present when it was time for me to go before the judge and was denied bail…he never really listened to my story to be able to defend me in court…he told me 3 days before I had to appear in court that I’m going to have to do jail time and demanded that I give him more money or he wouldn’t appear in court to represent me after already paying him to do his job…why would I pay him more and your telling me basically you have to do jail time there is nothing I could do…I got rid of him and found a better lawyer that is actually on my side and represented me the way a lawyer should…this guy will take a case knowing he can not handle it just for the money…my opinion he is washed up and have been doing this for a long time…I would suggest if this is your lawyer or your thinking of hiring him because his price is reasonable don’t and please get rid of him he is bad news…his ratings and reviews say a lot about him.I only gave him 1 star because I had to in order to leave a review.

Yes this guy is a sell out,he represented me in 2000 and I can say he took my money and sold me out. First of all,he wasn't prepared. Next, he went from representing me to, after he got paid he tried to convince me to play for the other team. Then he said it was too late to get fire him and get another attorney and pushed my case through a speedy trial. And that's after he told me I could only get enhanced 3 more years if I lost, which was misrepresented to me. So, I would definitely stay away from him

I will say that I have used Joe for all of my criminal cases over the past 5 years and I have referred some of my closest friends and family to him. From reading the review below, I can agree that sometimes Joe isn’t the best with communication but when the time comes, he is always prepared. He has a plan and a back up plan from day one and he fights hard for his clients. He’s not afraid of using more complicated defenses that less experienced attorneys wouldn’t touch. He will blast the prosecution and make them look stupid. His presentation is always strategic and planned out perfectly.

Joseph Hudak is listed here as suspended, but he is no longer, he was reinstated by the PA BAR and is practicing again. This lawyer is a con artist, he will sound like the nicest hardest fighting lawyer you've ever had, he will answer all your phone calls and even come to see you, until you pay him. Then he will do nothing on your case, he waits until the last minute to do everything, all his work is half-hearted, and frankly terrible quality; man should not be practicing law at all. I've heard his talent lies in his trial ability, but his actual knowledge of the law is horrendous, I pity anyone serving a life sentence who has hired him for an appeal---you will lose your appeal before you started it. Additionally, the man consistently abandons clients, he was accused of this several times in the past, and even charged criminally for taking money to represent clients and then abandoning them; someone he was exonerated of the charges, but there is more than one person who has accused him this practice. I actually met one in person who claimed the man totally quit coming to his court hearings after he paid him and the Ct. had to give him a Court appointed. Lastly, regarding his actual legal ability, specifically on appeals, I cant find record of a single Criminal appeal he actually won. Personally, I will regret the day for the rest of my life I paid this man the only money I had, money I could've paid to a real lawyer, and he filed complete garbage. All I can emphasize is, please don't be fooled, there is people on here who wrote positive reviews, I don't know their situation, but If I was you, and If I could go back, I would not risk it. The man has many accusations of outright abandoning clients at the trial stage, and for appeal, the man horrendous.

Joe was very honest with me during my trial and he worked extremely hard for me. He's definitely not a company man.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
