Over my lifetime I've had the opportunity, to interact with members of the legal profession in a variety of contexts as an expert witness, pro bono adviser to a public defender, as a member of multidisciplinary groups and on occasion, when in need of legal counsel. I have a background that allows me to judge attorneys on a variety of axes including their dialectical abilities, fund of knowledge, effectiveness in communicating with clients, staff, other professionals and in the courtroom, and on dysfunctional personality traits that might impede that communication. And I had no bones about doing just that when I met Attorney Jeff Garabedian. Introducing himself, and immediately inviting me to address him by his first name, told me a lot about his personality and style of interacting with a client, albeit another professional. My assessment of those was punctuated by how he immediately assuaged my legal concerns, his encouraging me to vent my frustrations, his way of summarizing the issues and formulating a strategy, but also his sense of humor and lyrical retorts to my (at times cheesy) puns. Even more important was his giving me his mobile phone number to reach him at any time. When I apologized about rambling in my usual TMI style, he told me not to worry because he amassed in his head for its potential future use what may seem to be even the most irrelevant information at the time. And when we briefly spoke of our backgrounds and he told me it was off the record, it conveyed as much. Jeff and I have been working together for coming on two years. I don't need to comment on his knowledge of the relevant law, as I{m sure it has been said many times before. His cautions and counsel in response to my, at times, overzealous desires to effect a solution to problems have been repeatedly borne out over the course of relationship. Yet he has been equally understanding when I acted in a more conciliatory fashion towards the defendant. Lastly, the facile manner with which he utilized his paralegal in our interactions was similar to those with me. And was Casey a font of knowledge in her own regard. D.
