Highly attentive and patient attorney who takes the time to listen and provide honest, professional advice

2
Empathetic and supportive during stressful situations like divorce
“I have never met a more empathetic person who really understood what I was going through. Facing these issues is stressful enough When you have an attorney who actually has your back you feel like you can get through it.”
3
Highly accessible and responsive, even on weekends
“He is accessible 24 hours a day and his staff are very courteous and respectful. He always returns my emails calls and texts, even on the weekend.”
Cons
1
Questionable billing practices, including padded expenses and failure to provide promised services
“Extremely expensive ($350 hr) attorney who has highly questionable billing practices. Expect to be billed $90 just to have a court date notification letter sent to you. Will talk a big game with lots of bravado all the while cunningly underbidding his services so as to enable himself to "replenish" the retainer once it is exhausted ... which will be gone in lightening speed.”
2
Lack of availability and responsiveness when needed
“Tried to get in touch with him when the ex came to try and empty the house I just bought again.... he was no where to be found!!! Terrible job, thief and really classless.”

Took CASH as the retainer. He said to give him more as it lessens the amount potentially available to the ex wife. Give back the excess at the end. Well, once he had the cash it was all gone!!! Padded the expenses. Took 20K and did nothing for it. Then asked for another 5k to finish....... Are you kidding me, a thief amongst lawyers. Tried to get in touch with him when the ex came to try and empty the house I just bought again.... he was no where to be found!!! Terrible job, thief and really classless. I guess CASH taints even lawyers who are supposed to be protecting you.

Family Court is a dynamic all its own. You never know what you are going to get. Divorce is an emotional roller coaster. I have never met a more empathetic person who really understood what I was going through. Facing these issues is stressful enough When you have an attorney who actually has your back you feel like you can get through it. He is accessible 24 hours a day and his staff are very courteous and respectful. He always returns my emails calls and texts, even on the weekend. When the divorce was finalized, I felt like I was very well represented by Sangiovanni.

Peter Sangiovanni Jr. Is the most level minded, attentive attorney that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He takes the time to listen, review and give an honest opinion of the matter at hand. His patience is "bar none". Although my situation was just a small matter, he took the time to hands my situation and resolve it with the utmost professionalism and a rate that was reasonable. I totally recommend this attorney for any family law issues. He's the top of the game and tells you up front- he's here to get the job done.

Twelve years ago Peter Sangiovanni was recommended to my by a lawyer friend to handle my divorce. I was a stay a home wife/mother divorcing a powerful Providence business owner. He hired the most notorious lawyer in the area and was backed by money, position, etc. Peter was nothing short of professional yet actually listened to me and supported me (in my hysteria). He worked overtime to protect my interests in every way. He was informative and impressed upon me each step of the way how 'the game' is played. Finally he wrote the divorce decree in such a way as to thwart any possible loopholes of which my former husband could take advantage. One stipulation between my former husband and I was that he could wait ten years before giving me my half of the marital assets (yes I know, bad move on my part). When my payment was due, my former husband tried to not have to pay me my portion of the marital assets. He forced me into family court, again and managed to drag out the proceedings for over a year. (This was due to him and the court.) Mr. Sangiovanni, by using extreme hard work, integrity and the airtight decree he had worded, managed to finally thwart my former husband's dirty dealings and not only got me my due but discounted his fee as I was left with the bill. Again he was also incredibly supportive and knowledgeable and kept me sane through a very scary time that could easily have ended unfairly. I am not a big fan of our court systems and lawyers in general, but this man does his job with the utmost of unwavering integrity and sincerity and honesty. I highly recommend him.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Warwick, Rhode Island?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
