We retained the Law Office of Laura Huggins to close on our home in Chapin; a for sale by owner property that was far from simple and even further from a smooth transaction. The seller was demanding, set in his ways and strongly opinionated which made the sale challenging. Laura and her paralegal team were very caring and patient though the process, which is precisely what was needed for this deal to go through. Sheri and Valerie provided us assurance and walked us through all the necessary documentation. Laura is well versed in real estate transactions and addressed the all the legal issues. She has a thorough understanding and ability to address complex matters in a professional and comprehensive way. This resulted in our successful closing and beautiful new home on the lake. We would highly recommend the Law Office of Laura Huggins to anyone looking for a professional honest and caring team, knowledgeable in their trade. Alice & Robert T

If you need a meticulous, honest, intelligent and reasonable attorney, The Laura Huggins Law Firm is the one for you. Laura and the entire office staff is professional, extremely efficient and will provide you with the excellent legal advise you deserve. Because of Laura's extensive legal background, she can work through any issues that may arise eliminating any delays and unnecessary costs. Our closing should have been a quick and easy process but we were dealing with a Corporate Relocation Company and the entire process became a nightmare of forms and tasks to be completed. Many hours of phone conversations and email exchanges were required to complete our closing within the contracted timeframe. Only because of her persistence and knowledge of the real estate closing process were we able to move into our new home on the scheduled date. At the present time, my husband is retired, but during his 40+ year career we relocated 15 times........ which brings me to main reason we were so impressed with the legal services we received from The Laura Huggins Law Firm. The entire team is without a doubt the best legal associates we have ever dealt with. We are currently using her firm for additional services regarding personal financial matters and estate planning. We trust her with all of our legal needs and would personally recommend her to anyone needing honest, comprehensive and efficient legal assistance. We are very confident that once you meet Laura and her team of professionals, you will totally agree with our reference.

After careful review of the details of my case Mr. Shaffer decided to take it. He was straightforward and didn't tell me things that he thought I wanted to hear. He took the time to explain the law to me and ensured me the law was on my side. People need to feel that they have someone on their side as well when they need legal representation . With his help and dedication the courts then saw that my convictions of 25 years and 15 years we're both unlawful and in doing so the court overturned both convictions. I had never met a lawyer that was for his clients like mr. Shaffer. I wish we had more attorneys like Tristan in our legal system to ensure that all people receive Justice.

If I could rate Mr. Shaffer as a 6 star I would do so. In March of 2017, I was charged with two felony counts of Domestic violence of a high and agervated nature. Obviously I highly disagreed with what I was facing. So I hired Tristan Shaffer, after several meetings with other lawyers. From day one he was one of the most understanding and open minded person I've met In my life, he sees both sides of your situation. He was always available if I needed to ask questions, or if I was concerned about something, there were also a couple of weekends that I was able to contact him, from what I have researched that's very rare for an attorney to be available over the weekend. He obviously worked his tail off for my case because He was able to get one of the 2 charges I had completely dismissed which then left me with 1 high and aggravated nature at that time, he was able to get that charge dropped to a second degree assault and battery which is a misdemeanor. I was looking at a 40 year sentence With the 2 original charges combined. He is a straight to the point aggressive lawyer in the courtroom who makes very good points and is able to backup his research and is always prepared , And from what I witnessed I saw that he also had good relationships with the prosecutors of the state which to me is very important, I cannot thank Mr. Shaffer enough, he was great with my family as well as with me. I highly recommend Mr. Shaffer for anyone who has any kind of criminal charges pending against them. He literally saved my reputation and my job, And now because of him me and my wife are able to move on from all of this. Thank you again Mr. Shaffer.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Chapin, South Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
