Families in crisis are dealing with so much outside of legal matters. It was so refreshing to find Crossroads Family Law was more than "our attorney." Kathy Hubbard made sure to cover all our bases legally and found a way to make us feel seen in the midst of this crisis. We recommend this business with great confidence.

Katie and David are amazing! I've been fighting for custody for my children for years now and there's been plenty of times where I've wanted to give up. If you are going through a divorce or simply fighting for custody I cannot stress enough how important it is to get a high quality attorney in your corner! I truly felt like they cared about me and my case.

From my first call to Taylor, he has been nothing but wonderful! Taylor, took care of everything and just kept me updated. When I did need some encouraging words, he worked hard on the case and the case was never stagnate. Taylor reminded me that it was three of in the case and fought for us. Tayloris a very down to earth guy, professional and takes his work and your case seriously.

Colin, and associates, represented us on a licensing problem with the SC Dept of Revenue. His depth of analysis was intensive while keeping our costs in range. Our result was a success and we are delighted to be able to recommend Colin. Had we lost the case the review would be the same.

*****Are you looking for the BEST lawyer? ***** Someone with the job description “lawyer” who truly lives up to what a lawyer is called to be? Then please….. PLEASE STOP….. and READ THIS REVIEW. A FEW EXTRA MINUTES OF READING COULD CHANGE EVERYTHING. …..……… REVIEW: …..………. I was just an ordinarytourist on a trip to Charleston, walking the historic town and enjoying the sights, when a careless driver behind the wheel of a vehicle hit me and altered both part of my body and my life. ……….. The lawyer that I initially signed with was not able to dig me out of the hole of medical bills that I eventually did acquire. As a result, he ended up handing my case over to Allison Gutberlet. I cannot thank that lawyer enough. From the start, Ms. Gutberlet was both highly professional and truly understanding. She was the way human beings are supposed to be, but often seem to fail at being. The way lawyers are supposed to be, but often seem to fail at achieving. From our very first conversation, she took the time to genuinely listen to my concerns. Not just give me time to talk in between her own sentences, but genuinely listen. I was in a rather unusual situation at the time, which I felt I needed to share. Her empathy and compassion in regards to this was outstanding. She revealed to me a woman of great integrity and a highly developed character that I would find unusual for anyone, not just a lawyer. She made me feel that I was more than simply another client. With Allison Gutberlet I found that I was treated as a true living, breathing individual, whose own specific situation and concerns were not only heard, but sincerely cared about. ***IN A NUTSHELL, I COULD TELL SHE WAS DEFINITELY NOT YOUR AVERAGE LAWYER.*** Best of all, when it came to fighting for me, Ms. Gutberlet continued to exceed all expectations and outperform all hopes by leaps and bounds. With Allison Gutberlet at the “helm” of my case, I soon found that everything began to change. I went from an initial offer via my first lawyer that would have left me thousands and thousands of dollars in debt to an offer that suddenly took me out of debt. Even better, as time passed, I found that not only was she digging me OUT of the nasty cave of debt that I had found myself in, but she was actually achieving GENEROUS COMPENSATION for my injuries (as I should have been compensated, but had almost lost hope of being). --------->. By the time everything was said and done, I was to receive a settlement that was completely beyond anything that I had expected or even hoped for. I HONESTLY FIND THAT THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH WRITING THIS REVIEW IS THAT I CANNOT FIND A WAY TO RECOMMEND ALLISON GUTBERLET HIGHLY ENOUGH. ***SHE WAS TRULY DEDICATED TO FIGHTING FOR ME.*** She never gave up on my case, as problematic as it was. SHE WAS RELENTLESS AND UNSTOPPABLE. A FIERCE ADVOCATE FULL OF HEART. I am an artist as well as a writer, and I have spent a great deal of time thinking about this. As a result, I have come to the conclusion that if I could take my creative background and sum Allison Gutberlet up as a lawyer in a few words it would be this: ***BEAUTIFULLY COMPASSIONATE; FIERCELY FOR YOU.*** Thank you, Allison Gutberlet. You changed and turned everything around in the most remarkable way. :-). ***(Please forgive the poor formatting. Avvo only allows for one gigantic block of text. As a result, extra caps, etc. were added to try to attempt to make the review easier to read. But if you made it this far, I am sure you can see that Ms. Gutberlet is worth the read… and the call. ;-)

My wife and I have consulted Ms. Gutberlet about various legal issues and found her to be fair and engaging as well as assertive when the situation demands. Her advise has been fair and honest and also timely. Her knowledge of the law is quite expansive for one who is new to the profession.

In an era of little communication and seemingly a “just another number” attitude that I felt from other firms while looking for someone to represent me, Allison is instead a commensurate professional - I felt important throughout my case and she answered questions and provided updates to me, many times outside of normal business hours. In a very frustrating time of my life, she provided great support and expertise. I would recommend her to anyone who wants someone who will represent you with passion and incredible knowledge. She knows how to get the most for you and not back down from the big guys. Thank you Allison!

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Charleston, South Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
