Last year I was involved in a case with DSS and I decided to hire Mary Lee Briggs as my attorney. The whole process extended for a year and half but she made sure to keep my mind at ease at all times. She puts herself in your shoes when she is representing you and that’s something you don’t find everywhere. Mary Lee was very responsive and always listened and addressed all my concerns and I honestly felt like I was in great hands; she knows the law and understands all the proceedings which made me feel very comfortable and secure with her services. She did an amazing job and the results were positive for me, I can’t thank her enough for her services, I will always be thankful for how she handled my situation. I highly recommend Mary Lee and her team to anyone seeking legal representation that is fair and honest.

I can't thank Mary Lee enough for her support and strong ability to represent me for my divorce. I had moved from SC to Colorado and secured her while moving. Although it was a 1.5 year process, she was extremely supportive throughout the time. My ex was less than cooperative and honest during the entire process, but she kept encouraging me to hang in there until we had our time in court. She hit it out of the park when it came to the trial by addressing the issues at hand... extremely prepared and tactful. Things ended positively for me, even after a scare of a mistrial, she advocated for me. I can't thank Mary Lee enough. Divorces are never fun and there are two sides to every broken marriage, however, if you need a divorce attorney to help tell your side of the story and fight for your rights, she definitely will have your back.

I used Mrs. Briggs for a custody case throughout 2016 and 2017. Mrs. Briggs was extremely professional and efficient throughout the entire process. She always got back to me in a timely manner and kept me informed of what was going on throughout the case. She explained all the legal jargon to me, and allowed me to make decisions on the case instead of telling me what to do. I would highly recommend her to anyone in the area needing a family lawyer.

Mary lee helped me through a divorce that was hell and back over again. I had contacted and talked with previous lawyers but I just didn’t have that feeling with them. i got her number off the internet and it was the jackpot. She was beyond the point of nice and presented such hospitality. I didn’t have to go to court because she settled everything during mediation. She answered and guided me through the situation like a father teaching a child how to ride a bike without training wheels. The price is right and she is just awesome. I just can’t say thank you enough for what she has done for me. I have recommended her to some of my friends and they love her work too. She has a layer back demeanor which is so cool. Hiring her was the best. No complaints at all. Two thumbs up!! I got what I deserved from the divorce. A piece of mind. To anyone reading this and looking for divorce attorney or child separation attorney look no further. She is the truth. The staff is excellent and friendly. Awesome ! Awesome! Awesome!

Mary Lee was awesome when I was going through my divorce and child support. Every time I had a question or a concern, she ALWAYS was there to assist me. She was truthful about every circumstance and situation and she was very hands on. Some attorneys use their paralegals for communication but not Mary Lee!! She has made this horrible experience the BEST experience with her superior expertise and commitment to her practice. I HIGHLY recommend Mary Lee.

So frequently, when one is trying to seek some answers, many people reply in a hasty fashion. This attorney did not. He thoroughly answered all of my questions in our several emails with each other. I will be hiring him later this year or early next year.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Charleston, South Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
