Chris Archer helped me walk through one of the most painful seasons of my life - divorce. He maintained a professional, patient, and kind demeanor with me at all times. If you are looking for an attorney who is patient in explaining the law, kind and considerate with your season of pain, and professional in handling the legalities of divorce while helping manage appropriate expectations for what the law will provide, then Chris is the attorney for you. Chris is fair, honest, practical, and handles the law responsibly while handling his clients with respect.

It is my opinion that this law firm has very aggressive billing practices and rates. When dealing with Chris Archer I mustered together $7,500 that I did not have at the time due to the circumstances of my case and literally being left with nothing but a car and clothes on my back. I did this to try to see my toddler child whom was taken from me and transported across country. The majority of that $7,500 retainer was used up in what seemed to be a matter of days with absolutely nothing accomplished. I have since used other attorneys and it has taken them months to reach that same $7,500 quota while they did more work and attended multiple hearings. In hindsight, it’s my opinion, that Chris Archer should have never even taken my case with the legal knowledge that he should possess. Due to the circumstances of my case he was unable to accomplish anything on my behalf and he (in hindsight and in my opinion) should have known as much before accepting the retainer. When choosing an attorney do not forget that they are not your friends. They are operating a business. The goal is for them to make money and take care of their family (not yours). Someone has to pay for that office in Downtown Columbia. Do your own research and make the best decision for you. You won’t get a second chance.

Mr. Bell got to work on my case immediately after I retained him. He worked weekends and evenings and did whatever it took to achieve the best possible results for me. I faced substantial charges, but Mr. Bell had them dropped entirely. He is extremely persuasive in the courtroom and won't stop until he reaches the best outcome for his client. I am deeply grateful for the work he did on my case. Nothing ever fell through the cracks with him, and he pushed the prosecutor to move things along as quickly as possible. He was available night or day to address problems in the case. A top notch professional by any standard. I'd highly recommend him if you or a loved one finds themselves in an unfortunate predicament with the law.

Taylor Bell with the Jeffcoat Law firm did a great job for a situation which could have become much worse and result in criminal case. But Taylor provided effective representation and stood up to law enforcement that would not go down without a fight. Sometimes they get things wrong.

It has been an absolute pleasure working with Brent Takach. We found an amazing person in Brent while seeking an attorney for my husband to adopt my daughter. He worked diligently on our case from day one on every single task involved. As well as, keeping us informed of every detail along the way. He is beyond incredible in his ability to always be one step ahead of the game to tackle any issues that may arise. Every case is different and unique, but ours being a termination of parental rights with adoption, is not as easy and simple as it sounds. It is very complicated but Brent was ready at all times. With him being so upfront with us about issues that could occur, this put our minds at ease completely. And allowed us to trust him and the process. His level of knowledge and professionalism while also being “real” with us, I feel, can’t be beat. If we happen to need an attorney again in the future, we will not hesitate to work with Brent again. My husband and I cannot recommend him enough!

Brent Takach is an amazing attorney and having him to oversee my divorce was the best decision I could have made. Not only is his legal prowess unmatched, but he is the definition of professional, kind, and compassionate. These attributes were tremendously important to me due to the sensitive nature of my divorce. I never once felt like “just another client” to Brent. He took the time to answer my questions and walked me through every step of the process. He eased my fears and made this process as painfree as he could. I would highly recommend Brent to anyone going through the difficult decision to divorce.

We contacted Brent to do adoption paperwork for my husband to adopt my daughter. I told him what I wanted to do and he got everything rolling for us. He set everything up, explained everything that we would have questions on, and always kept in touch with me. We will definitely use Brent again if we ever need him and I also will recommend him to anyone that is looking for a lawyer.

I reside in Virginia. I sought an attorney to help me change the ownership of a deed to property that I own in South Carolina. Through the firm, “Blair | Cato | Pickren | Casterline, LLC”, I was introduced to Brandon J Gregg. He’s an associate attorney with the firm. My experience follows. Brandon promptly answered my questions and quickly delivered the product. I found him to be a down to earth person with to work and a professional (he was good at preparing the product). The product looked good, so good that I had thoughts of framing it. As for his service (deed preparation and recordation), his performance was outstanding. As for product (a deed and affidavit) that he delivered, the quality was excellent especially for the price. Given my experience with him, I highly recommend Brandon J Gregg.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Columbia, South Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
