Margaret handled my divorce with grace, compassion and ease! She and her staff really made a hard time much easier on me. She always placed my best interest and the best interest of my child first. Margaret is diligent and did an excellent job handling all of the details of my divorce. She is very knowledgeable and always sets expectations so I never felt like I was getting caught off guard. She went above and beyond even after the divorce was final. I highly recommend Margaret and will always consider her my go to lawyer.

I have been a client of Chamberlain Law Firm for over seven years! I first came to Margaret in the middle of a custody battle. Prior to meeting with her I tried to handle things on my own and landed myself in a very precarious position. I did not wish to fight with my ex, but simply do what was going to be best for the two young children. My ex had other plans. In hindsight I wish I would have met with her sooner. If you are considering whether you should or shouldn't get an attorney… You need to just come speak with Margaret. She is a wealth of knowledge! I won't bore you with the sob story that was my life. All I can say is Margaret took ALL my mess...and it WAS a mess! She explained very thoroughly what my expectation should be, what I should do, what I should be prepared for. From the first time that I walked into Margaret Chamberlain's office and met Deanne and Kathy I felt cared for. I felt like they understood my goal was to protect my children and not to hurt someone else. Over the years I have grown very fond of those women not just on a personal level, but I have the upmost respect for their level of professionalism and and competence. I have never called with a question that couldn't be answered, and if they didn't have an answer Deanne was sure to get back to me promptly. I have asked this law firm for help on many different occasions raging from divorce decrees, child custody and visitation, contempt hearing's, and modification of orders. I have referred close friends to her as well and they have been ecstatic with their results! In the end we all want what's best for our children, or maybe we don't have children and someone is trying to take advantage of us. It's important to have someone like Margaret protecting you.

2016 was a very tough year for my family. My step daughters mother made some significant changes in her life that would have taken an A student out of an excellent school, 400 miles away from everything she knew and loved. Including friends and family, moving her the unknown with a new stepfather that was not out for her well being. We were terrified for what her future was to hold. We were scare, angry, very upset... anxious. Margaret and her staff felt like family, they understood how and why we felt what we felt. And we felt their concerns for our daughter as well. They understood this was our world right now and we just needed the safety of this child to be put first and foremost. Deanne and Kathy were always sure to understand any concern when we contacted the office whether via email or phone so as to relay to Ms. Chamberlain in the best to their ability for her to get back to us with an answer promptly. My step daughter had a change in custody to her father - temporary custody end of summer 2016. Father got sole custody mid summer 2017. Both very unusual results. Thank you all so much!!! We are so grateful.

We contacted Chamberlain Law Firm to help us with estate planning for the 2 of us at first. When life happened, we continued to contact the firm to assist us in adoption, second parent adoption and updating our estate planning. We will be heading back again soon to update the estate documents again, and will continue going back. This Firm is professional and determined to ensure that your best interests are met. Everyone provides a personal experience whether it is to help you plan or to help you in your current situation. We have, and will continue to, recommend this Firm to countless friends and family.

My wife and I hired the Chamberlain Law Firm to help us with a custody case during a time when same-sex marriage was not recognized in South Carolina, therefore our Vermont wedding held little weight. The custody agreement was quite restrictive and prohibited my wife and I and our children from living together unless legally married. Margaret and her team worked tirelessly for us, and in July of 2015, we won our case and were finally allowed to live together as a family. We then hired them to draw up wills for us. Margaret and Melissa are professional, attentive, supportive and determined. After losing at our very first court hearing, my wife and I were feeling hopeless. The next day, we received a card in the mail from Margaret assuring us that the fight was not over, and she would continue until we won the rights we deserved. We would recommend Margaret to anyone! (We were so pleased with Margaret that we actually named our Great Dane puppy after her.)

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Greenville, South Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
