Making the decision to get a divorce, is one of the hardest choices you will ever make. The next biggest decision is who will represent you and do it well. Ashby Jones and her team did just that and more! Even though, the process is messy, hard and uncomfortable. Ashby Jones and her extraordinary team made the process seamless, they were very detailed and matter of fact. Ashby Jones and her team were very organized, prepared and ready though out my whole case, Mediation is a process that can be extremely overwhelming; however, when that day came her team made me feel safe and protected which is HUGE! Not only is this firm top notch in their expertise of family law, she will fight for you til the end! One of the biggest gifts about her and her team is they were ALWAYS working for me ,the client and my best interest, which allowed me to rest peacefully. Ashby Jones and her amazing team were worth it! I am grateful that I made the choice to have Ashby Jones represent me! She did it well!

I had a very pleasant experience dealing with Mrs. Jones and her team through my divorce. They made things very easy for me and gave me options. I never felt like they were trying to sell me anything but rather give me the best options I had available for a speedy divorce. If I ever had questions the team there could answer them or got back to me quickly. I ended up in the end getting what I wanted and again I don’t think there is a better choice out there in the midlands area.

I can't even begin to tell you how wonderful Ashby and her staff have been to me. I came to them in a situation I never dreamed I would find myself in, and from the very first meeting I knew I was going to be ok. Ashby and her whole staff were so comforting and reassuring and gave me absolute confidence that I was in the best hands. They always responded in a super timely manner to each and every email or phone call I made in a thorough and caring manner. This team, and a special shout out to Charlotte, took what started as a nightmare and turned it around and helped me navigate every step to my new and better life. I would recommend them to anyone going through a divorce or any other family legal matter. They are professional, prompt, and caring.

Pros
1
Highly skilled and experienced family law attorney who is respected by peers and the courts
“If you are looking for a family lawyer, the cream of the crop, the best in the Midlands, perhaps even in South Carolina and a true fighting trial lawyer, a legal scholar who can argue cases all the way to the US supreme court for seemingly unwinnable custody cases, I highly recommend Mrs. Ashby Johnson along with her new protégés amazingly intelligent lawyers Mr. Bob Jackman and Mrs. Rebekah Bonekamp.”
2
Thorough preparation and strong courtroom performance that achieves favorable outcomes for clients
“Her preparation, presentation, and persuasion led to an outcome better than I had ever hoped possible.”
3
Personalized attention and responsiveness to client needs throughout the legal process
“I always felt that she and her partners (Murry and Bob) were personally invested in my case and their staff members were always very responsive to me.”
4
Ability to handle complex, high-stakes family law cases involving issues like domestic violence, parental alienation, and child custody
“She found the best experts, and other expert lawyers in two specific areas when we had to go to the appellate court. She won eight consecutive hearings for me until, finally, the other side threw the towel and had to settle through mediation in August of 2020.”
5
Strong moral compass and commitment to integrity in representing clients
“Her persistence and integrity is in my eyes above all. I owe her so many thanks for protecting my family.”

Kent was referred to me by a friend when I got a DUS. Kent explained my charges and the process to me. At the first court date he got my charges dropped. I am very happy with the job he did for me.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lexington, South Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
