I hired Ms. Fudge at the suggestion of another attorney. I paid a flat fee. The case dragged on with no resolution. Finally, after paying a fee to Ms. Fudge, she suggested I let her be relieved of the duties which I had already paid for and I ended up having to pay thousands to another attorney to finish the case. I should have been repaid for the expenses paid out of my pocket to Ms. Fudge, but the judge only allowed slightly less than 1/3 of what I paid to be reimbursed to me stating that the court didn't feel she had earned what she was paid; therefore, I was screwed out of several thousands I paid to her. Not happy with service or results.

This Atty is trustworthy. She actually suggested doing a few things on my own as to save on legal fees. Her option was to say nothing, do as requested, and really stick it to me. She didn't. As well, she took my case based on full knowledge of how much I was will to spend to try and achieve a resolve/compromise Alyson Fudge is why our next President will be a woman. She is understanding, empathetic, and trustworthy

It’s rare that you find people singing the praises of lawyers, so I thought it’s worth calling out a great experience I’ve recently had with one. Her name is Alyson Fudge . Alyson is different for a number of reasons. First of all, From my experiences as a client, Ms. Fudge goes above and beyond what is required of an attorney. She truly invests herself in the best interests of the client. She was extremely attentive, sensitive, and thorough toward my needs as a client, and I would absolutely give her my highest recommendation to anyone interested in her services.

There are not enough words to convey what a blessing Mr.Emerson was for our family. He fought for my daughter on a college level to make sure her accommodations were legally met. When we called him to tell him all the hard work had paid off and she was accepted into her program, it felt like we had just told a family member. He was so excited for her and that meant so much to us. He has a true passion and love for what he does. I would highly recommend him. He's not just an awesome attorney but he's a wonderful, caring person. We just can't thank him enough.

Mr. Emerson was instrumental in helping me through a very difficult time with my school district. I would have been at a loss without him. I am now in a much healthier situation, mentally and financially! If you're in education or have an educational legal issue, he is your guy! I feel grateful and blessed to have had him on my side during such an awful time! Thank you!

I came to Julianne with limited knowledge on how the Family Court system works after having a less-than-stellar experience with another attorney. From the first email/phone call to the final hearing, I was comfortable, secure, and certain that she had the experience and knowledge to get me from point A to point B. Every question was answered, no matter how insignificant, and always in a timely manner. She, and her staff, made sure that I was well aware of every step that was taken and that I understood every step along the way. I could not have asked for better representation.

Julianne Stokes was very knowledgeable about how to best handle different aspects of a separation agreement and a divorce but also had reliable recommendations of other professionals for further opinions in different fields. The way the entire process was handled on a business and personal level was of the highest integrity and compassion.

I had the best experience working with Mr. Matthew Breen. He was able to help me with a case I tried to work out on my own for some time and as soon as I decided to have him help me things went smooth and fast, he definitely delivered on the outcome. After one time meeting with him and getting to know each other I felt confident that he was the one that would help me get the justice I deserved. Thank you Lowcountry Law for your hard work and dedication.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
