I came to Julianne with limited knowledge on how the Family Court system works after having a less-than-stellar experience with another attorney. From the first email/phone call to the final hearing, I was comfortable, secure, and certain that she had the experience and knowledge to get me from point A to point B. Every question was answered, no matter how insignificant, and always in a timely manner. She, and her staff, made sure that I was well aware of every step that was taken and that I understood every step along the way. I could not have asked for better representation.

Julianne Stokes was very knowledgeable about how to best handle different aspects of a separation agreement and a divorce but also had reliable recommendations of other professionals for further opinions in different fields. The way the entire process was handled on a business and personal level was of the highest integrity and compassion.

Julianne was tremendously helpful during my divorce litigation and helped achieve the result I was hoping for. Throughout the process she was accessible, knowledgeable, encouraging and responsive. I would definitely hire her again if needed!

I was introduced to Julianne through a mutual friend, who thought I would benefit from her advice. My husband and I had been separated for a while and only needed to finalize our divorce. I went to Julianne for advice, but was given so much more! She and her staff were very compassionate and professional and only seemed to want the best for me and my son. They informed me of the divorce process and offered advice on child support, child custody, and visitation. Words cannot express my gratitude. I am forever indebted to this firm and the services they provided for me. I could not have asked for a better experience!

There are not enough words to convey what a blessing Mr.Emerson was for our family. He fought for my daughter on a college level to make sure her accommodations were legally met. When we called him to tell him all the hard work had paid off and she was accepted into her program, it felt like we had just told a family member. He was so excited for her and that meant so much to us. He has a true passion and love for what he does. I would highly recommend him. He's not just an awesome attorney but he's a wonderful, caring person. We just can't thank him enough.

Mr. Emerson was instrumental in helping me through a very difficult time with my school district. I would have been at a loss without him. I am now in a much healthier situation, mentally and financially! If you're in education or have an educational legal issue, he is your guy! I feel grateful and blessed to have had him on my side during such an awful time! Thank you!

Having someone go the extra mile, when I wasn’t able to, made me feel much better about my involvement and my responsibilities related to a foreclosure matter against a series of large banks I was handling for more than 5 years. Ms. Gaddy’s high standards and attention to detail made the process and result something I can look back on happy that I was involved. I felt lucky to find someone who wasn’t content with knowing more than me she wanted to know more than all the experts involved and the Judge’s order indicates that she did. It was a tremendous relief to know that we shared the same goal for the result of the case. I looked like a hero when it could have gone a very different way. I regularly conduct business with people and I try not to get upset when someone values their payment over their performance but I truly enjoy when someone values their performance above all. Thank you Susan for making this the foreclosure equivalent of David VS Goliath instead of the basketball equivalent of Michael Jordan VS Damian Falcone.

Ms. Gaddy took real concern for my situation from the initial consultation forward. She laid out what was needed, cost, possible outcomes, contingency plans and probable outcomes in a clear and concise manner. I retained Ms. Gaddy late in the process as I was blindsided by a foreclosure hearing on my mother’s home. Ms. Gaddy dropped weekend plans writing answers, motions, and collecting information (all that legal stuff only lawyers know) to halt the proceedings. Her keen knowledge of South Carolina foreclosures and her experience with the complexities of the process were clearly evident as the tables turned after our first court hearing. I can't imagine going through it without Ms. Gaddy.

  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
