Mr. and Mrs. Hanzel responded quickly when guidance was sought in my case. They were very professional and every step of the way they made sure that they had my back and put their best foot forward representing me in my military matter and also getting me the result that I was aiming for. By far best attorneys out there, hands down. Hire them!!!

Mike and Lauren are the absolute BEST! Do not do what I did and assume the military-appointed lawyers are going to take time to defend you. In my case, I had 2 military lawyers that completely botched my BOI...I was 1 month shy of 19 years in service at the time, had a flawless record (number 1 everywhere), I had a minor UCMJ violation, and the result of the board was 3-0 separate. WHAT?!? That's how bad they screwed it up. So I contacted Mike and Lauren and they jumped on my case. They were very thorough, responsive, and completely in control of my situation. Looking back, I should have not assumed my case was an easy, cut and dry case where the board would retain me...I should have called Mike and Lauren the second I knew I had an investigation on me. We somehow (thanks to Mike and Lauren) were able to salvage my retirement, but not my career. My advice, call or e-mail these guys the second you think you might be in trouble. They will guide you through the entire process and ensure you get the best possible outcome. I would never have been able to do what they did by myself or with any military-appointed lawyer, so do not hesitate to contact them! They truly are the best in the business and I can't thank them enough for everything they did for me!

I was on deployment and went to mast and got busted down. With the help of Michael and Lauren Hanzel I was able to get my rank and everything that was taken from me back. They were super flexible with my schedule and up front about everything going on. I was able to do most of it through email due to my situation, and even with that they managed to successfully work my case. I am so greatful I took the time and found the Hanzel Lawfirm for my case, I would recommend them anytime!

Mike and Lauren Hanzel represented me at an Art32(won) and a Admin separation board (won). In the world full of politics and the military more concerned about politics than the truth they stepped in to defend me. The are true experts at their craft. A true power couple who compliment each other in every way. After almost 20 years in the Military and dealing with numerous defense attorneys and Military lawyers as a leader. I can say without a doubt these two have the knowledge, answers, and experience to get you through your tough situation. False allegations are on the rise against those of us in the military. You will learn fast regardless of how great of a person you are. That once the allegation is made. Your command will turn their back on you. Mike and Lauren exposed all the lies and the truth prevailed. I will be forever in their debt. I can continue to serve on my terms and my 2 million Dollars in retirement benefits are safe.

There are not enough words to convey what a blessing Mr.Emerson was for our family. He fought for my daughter on a college level to make sure her accommodations were legally met. When we called him to tell him all the hard work had paid off and she was accepted into her program, it felt like we had just told a family member. He was so excited for her and that meant so much to us. He has a true passion and love for what he does. I would highly recommend him. He's not just an awesome attorney but he's a wonderful, caring person. We just can't thank him enough.

Mr. Emerson was instrumental in helping me through a very difficult time with my school district. I would have been at a loss without him. I am now in a much healthier situation, mentally and financially! If you're in education or have an educational legal issue, he is your guy! I feel grateful and blessed to have had him on my side during such an awful time! Thank you!

Having someone go the extra mile, when I wasn’t able to, made me feel much better about my involvement and my responsibilities related to a foreclosure matter against a series of large banks I was handling for more than 5 years. Ms. Gaddy’s high standards and attention to detail made the process and result something I can look back on happy that I was involved. I felt lucky to find someone who wasn’t content with knowing more than me she wanted to know more than all the experts involved and the Judge’s order indicates that she did. It was a tremendous relief to know that we shared the same goal for the result of the case. I looked like a hero when it could have gone a very different way. I regularly conduct business with people and I try not to get upset when someone values their payment over their performance but I truly enjoy when someone values their performance above all. Thank you Susan for making this the foreclosure equivalent of David VS Goliath instead of the basketball equivalent of Michael Jordan VS Damian Falcone.

Ms. Gaddy took real concern for my situation from the initial consultation forward. She laid out what was needed, cost, possible outcomes, contingency plans and probable outcomes in a clear and concise manner. I retained Ms. Gaddy late in the process as I was blindsided by a foreclosure hearing on my mother’s home. Ms. Gaddy dropped weekend plans writing answers, motions, and collecting information (all that legal stuff only lawyers know) to halt the proceedings. Her keen knowledge of South Carolina foreclosures and her experience with the complexities of the process were clearly evident as the tables turned after our first court hearing. I can't imagine going through it without Ms. Gaddy.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
