I was injured two years ago in an accident that in no way was my fault. I was taken to the ER and immediately told I would need surgery. I didn’t have health insurance at the time and was worried about how I was going to pay for all of these unexpected medical expenses. During my hospitalization my husband contacted the Joye Law Firm. One of the best decisions we ever made! From the very start the truck company, driver, and insurance company involved claimed that even though a part of their vehicle had fallen off and hit me, it was not their fault. They denied any wrong doing and did not feel that they should be in any way responsible for me or my medical costs. It was a fight right from the beginning and not something myself, nor my husband, would have been able to handle on our own. We were faced with every hurdle you could possibly imagine: evidence getting thrown away, records and logs not being made available, doctors stating I was fine despite still suffering a broken bone that nobody thought needed to fixed. Seriously, you name it and it was an issue for us. The Joye Law Firm was there with us every single step of the way! They constantly were looking and fighting for what was in my best interest. Without their help my medical bills would have not been covered and I would be in serious financial distress, I would still be in need of a second surgery (in pain everyday as a result), and a host of issues I’d still be facing; in other words, I’d be in a completely different situation then I am in right now. I know for a fact that it was only with the help of Mr. Joye and his law firm that I was able to get the second surgery I needed, my medical bills got covered, and my case was handled in the manner it should have been. This was definitely not something we could have done on our own and are so thankful we choice Joye to represent us.

I thought that I could deal directly with the insurance company regarding my accident that caused injuries. My brother who is in insurance told me to hire a good lawyer to represent me. This occured after being frustrated with the other persons insurance adjuster. I couldn't have found a better one in Mark Joye. He was kind, personable and offered great advice. He listened to my concerns and answered all my questions. His first concern to get me the medical treatments to help me get better. Which I definitely appreciated. Patience is a virtue and after 3 1/2 years I finally have recieved an amicable resolution. I truly appreciated and am thankful for Mark Joye and his team Alice and Shaun's efforts. I would definitely recommend Joye law firm to anyone that asks.

He has always explained things to me in a manner I can easily follow. Phone calls and emails are always answered in less than 24 hours. His staff is extremely professional and personable. I feel strongly that they always work for what is the best for me and doing everything they can to get the best result. We were hit by a drunk driver around 2011 and my husband sustained injuries that lead to a knee surgery. Long story short, the insurance company was refusing to pay for his surgery. Mark Joye fought really hard for us to get our fair shake and to have our medical bills and damages paid I think also lost wages because my husband is the sole breadwinner in our family and he had to stay out of work for almost a month. Mr. Joye did not settle for whatever the insurance company would offer and fought tooth and nail to get us what was deserved. In the end the case went to trial and although we did not win our case (through NO fault of mr. Joye) we left feeling good because we knew that our lawyer did everything that was humanly possible to get us taken care of. After the trial, we had hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt because of the surgery and medical bills, we were facing bankruptcy with a new child and it wouldn't have 100% ruined our marriage and our lives. However, Mr. Joye kept fighting for us after the trial was over and got our bills Drastically reduced to only a few thousand dollars ( down from over $130,000). Mr. Joye really helped our family by seeing that my husband was able to get the medical care that he needed and that the drunk driver and the insurance company were held accountable. Without him my husband would have been facing disability and unemployment and we would've been facing poverty. Even if my husband was able to get the medical care he required (which would've been almost impossible without insurance as this was before the affordable healthcare act) we would have been facing certain financial ruin that would have followed us for our entire lives. Mr. Joye and his staff stayed with us, kept us in the loop, and consulted with us regularly and consistently. Everything was explained honestly, thoroughly and accurately and we were left to make final decisions on things ourselves and playing an active role in this process. Mr. Joye's offices are very nice, clean orderly, and the staff is exceptionally professional. Everyone you meet in the building is friendly and greets you in the halls and while you may be facing intimidating circumstances, they make you feel comfortable and well taken care of. If we ever need a lawyer for something like this again we will immediately seek him out and we recommend him to everyone that we can. He and his associates saw us through a very difficult, long process and we can never be more thankful to them. As a result of our hardwork, my husband and myself and start our life as a little family with our son without a mountain of debt and disability looming over our heads. We are forever grateful.

He was always prompt in answering any questions or concerns I had in a very professional manor. I would highly recommend Mr. Jackson to represent anyone in need of a great Attorney.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of N Charleston, South Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.

Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.

Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
