Rex and Kayne were a great team to work with after our out-of-state motor vehicle accident in 2021. It was a stressful period and Rex was recommended to us by a friend. They did an excellent job in keeping us grounded when emotions were high, keeping us informed so we could make the best decisions possible, and ultimately achieving a fair settlement. Highly recommend this team of professionals!

I recently hired Tim Rensch to handle a legal matter for my fiancé. Her case was urgent and complex, so we absolutely required the very best legal representation available. Fortunately, I work closely with the criminal justice system in my profession, so via word of mouth, I was keenly aware of Tim's reputation for being a top-notch criminal attorney, as well as his reputation for being fair and affordable. And the fact that he is a fellow fisherman placed him at the top of my list. I cannot attest to his mastery of angling, but I can tell you this...Tim tackled our case with the urgency it demanded, avoided tedious time and money consuming litigation, and achieved the result we needed. My experience with Tim Rensch (and staff) has convinced me that no matter the stakes or legal matter at hand, this law firm will get it resolved with expediency, efficiency, and fairness. Now if Tim fishes half as well as he practices law, he truly has my utmost respect. Either way, he gets you off the hook.

We have been so well represented by Attorney Andrews that we want to endorse him as one of the very best attorneys in Rapid City. He is very knowledgeable as to the law and the intricacies of court room practice. He has been forthright in communicating with us as clients and practical minded in his approach to problems. His charges have been fair and reasonable. We know whereof we speak from years of experience in the law and with lawyers. ( I am a retired attorney, graduate of Harvard Law School, who practiced law in Boston for many years.)

I hired Attorney Andrews to defend me in a civil litigation case, and an appeals case. Attorney Andrews was kind, compassionate, and understanding. He presented himself very knowledgeable and well rounded in case law in the district courtroom and with the Massachusetts appeals court. He always kept mine, and my families best interest first and foremost. He returned every phone call promptly and answered ever question, which led us to a win and a resolution. Some lawyers can be taught "book smart" however some lawyers don't come down to the personal level of what a person and their family could be going through. Attorney Andrews brings that level to an understanding in such a compassionate way. He has an intense amount of patience, and makes you feel protected from a court system that at times does not do the right thing by innocent people. Attorney Andrews fights was what is right, and if he feels that, you may not be doing the right thing, he presents the law to you so that you can understand and make the right choices for you and your family. My family was successful with Attorney Andrews help. Attorney Andrews actual helped a family that was torn apart from the court system back together. When your involved in any court proceeding it can be a very scary place, and most lawyers won't even talk to you unless your wealthy. Attorney Andrews takes a view of the whole situation and just does the right thing by all. When my family was in court, to have the opposition attorney come up to you and say, "You are very lucky, you have a very good lawyer defending you." that says it all. Attorney Andrews is an attorney that my family would use again, and I would recommend him to anyone who wants to "win" there case. Attorney Andrews also has an incredible amount of common sense and a compassionate side to bring you through it. When your in court you want someone you can trust and who has the tenacity to fight for you and your rights, with Attorney Andrews you get more....please check him out if your in need of an attorney, my family is honored to have been so lucky.

After the death of my beloved husband in 2018, I was extremely fortunate to find the services of Jennifer and Jerad Tomac with “Tomac & Tomac, PLLC” in Rapid City, South Dakota. They were instrumental in helping me through the most difficult time in my life. Jennifer made the whole process easy with a very creative approach regarding the estate and trust, while I was dealing with so many issues. Now, thanks to Jennifer and Jerad Tomac, these very professional and timely attorneys, I am all set with my estate planning. Jennifer is very compassionate while exceptionally intelligent in many areas of the law. I became very ill, and she even came to the hospital (which was an hours drive from her office), in order for me to sign some important documents. She also has the gift of explaining complicated legal matters in a language that is completely understandable by anyone, and is the most caring attorney I have ever met. She truly was a blessing to me, and I highly recommend her without reservation. She will fight for you, be attentive to you, and she will give you the wonderful feeling that “everything will be fine”. I am so grateful, thank you Jennifer,

Jenny was extremely helpful and professional as we worked through developing my will and trust after my first child was born a few years ago. I knew I needed to get my “end of life” documents prepared but didn’t really know where to start, and Jenny made it easy. Thankful to have this foundation laid in the event something terrible happens; I’ll know at least it won’t be a messy situation for my children.

Ms. Tomac is an excellent attorney in the legal areas related to estates and trusts. She is very knowledgeable and provides no nonsense guidance and explanations. Ms. Tomac has guided me through the executorship of my mom's estate, a very difficult position emotionally. Her knowledge of the court system, of the administrative process that needed to happen when and where, and what to expect at each phase has been invaluable. She helped me to understand my mom's will and codicils as they were written, and helped me finalize her estate in accordance with my mom's wishes. We recommend her highly to anyone needing these type of services.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Rapid City, South Dakota?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
