Bill Pemerton was very helpful during our initial consultation even though he was located to far away to represent me in person. He assisted me with understanding the options available to me and gave advice on steps to take next to protect myself from further actions.

I am a local attorney representing parents in divorce and child custody proceedings. I know Mitch and Brian in their professional capacity as lawyers in the areas of creditor defense and criminal law. Both Mitch and Brian are well known, respected, and trusted among their peers in the legal community. Mitch has been an asset to me and my law firm by providing valuable guidance and advice on several occasions relating to collection of unpaid fees to my firm and unpaid money judgement/awards my clients have received but the other parent/spouse refuses to pay and tries to avoid. I recommend this law firm.

As someone who has never gotten a divorce and did not fully understand the process. I felt like I was left in the dark a lot. I had to constantly ask, “what happens next?” Even when I did get an answer it was vague. For example, I didn’t know my court hearing was over the phone until last minute. I didn’t know that my ex didn’t have to even be present on the call until last minute. It was very frustrating. I didn’t realize that I could have changed my name during the hearing until after it was finished and I got a follow up call. Then Mr. Pemerton tells me that since I didn’t change it during the hearing if I wanted to change it he’d offer me a discounted rate of $500 to change my name instead of his regular rate. He was very kind and professional in person though. He even walked me to my car at one point because I didn’t want to be cornered by my ex on the way out of the office. I just wish everything had been more upfront.

Hes young (33 I think) and his rate was the best we could find. Every other attorney we talked gave us doubletalk He never overbilled us or made us question his work. This blond wavy haired blued eyed lad got our company's draconian air pollution fines dropped from 40,000 to two grand last year and we weren't even polluting! He's the only attorney in Tennessee who sued the government to protect the endangered Nashville Crayfish from a 50 acre marina being built across Shelby Park in downtown Nashville. I am trying to hook my daughter up with him as a result! He moved back to Tennessee from Texas a few years ago. 936.615.3740 I suggest anybody with environmental or constitutional law issues contact him.

We hired Charlotte to help us in a custody case. Her professionalism is unparalleled, her quality of work is superior and her rates are fair. Charlotte's knowledge of the law and her tenacity to do what's right got me through many days and nights of stress. I have the upmost confidence in Spurgin & Mattingly and I would not hesitate to hire them again if needed. The team they have is incredible, from the receptionist, the paralegals and the attorneys all are winners in my book. Fennigan Spencer

Highly recommend this law firm. They are honest & fairly priced. Finding an attorney from a different state can be stressful. We hired Charlotte Mattingly and she was an excellent choice. Case was eventually settled out of court, but we were happy to have her represent us for the time we had her.

Ken was absolutely amazing. He made things happen in my case where other lawyers couldn't. He responds with urgency and is very genuine. He took time to check on me multiple times during a tough day and ensure I had what I needed to succeed in court. I am very thankful for.him and Tabatha and the work they have done for me. He is worth every single penny I have spent there. Highly recommended!!!

I was going to wait for my bankruptcy to be discharged and closed before leaving a full review - but I saw a 1 star review which, has 100% not been my experience with Mr. Rannick or his office. I understand they may have had a poor experience with his office, but most of the time when people yell about "how awful the lawyer/doctor/mechanic/etc" is - its usually because they've not provided the professionals trying to help them with proper information and when things don't work out, can't claim ownership over that. I mean, there could be truth to their experience - but saying my case has been handled a thousand percent differently so far - I doubt it. My experience so far has been great! The fees for my Chapter 7 case were reasonable and the service has been amazing. Also, Mr. Rannick has great payment plans which are very affordable. Weirdly enough, I was talking to a friend who also declared bankruptcy (years ago) and already had my initial appointment set up. He actually recommended this attorney as well! So as long as my service continues to be great - this review will be accurate. I don't see anything changing on that front, though!

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
