Matthew Ellis lies. He tells you he's doing something but gives you the run around. He doesn't follow up. He gives you court dates but its not on docket..He tells you he did something but he hasn't. He drags stuff on and doesn't file nessassry paper work. He leaves you hanging. Then other lawyers won't take you because you already have an attorney. Your better off doing everything yourself. Save your money.

Mr. Ellis in our view exhibited a callous disregard for our agreed interest. He QUIT in the middle of our case leaving us in a horrible position. Yes, he QUIT mid case for unknown reasons. He never communicated with us nor provided us with the representation he promised. Then a managing partner in the firm BATSON NOLAN called me to offer as a resolution, Analogies of someone who hires a "BAD PLUMBER " then agrees in the end to accept a refund of fees paid as a resolution for all indescrepancies in representation. It is not only unacceptable, it is extremely insulting.

Philip Mize was a tremendous help and of constant aid throughout the course of my divorce. Having very little knowledge of the process myself, Mr. Mize was patient with my countless questions and concerns and always made me feel informed and prepared for each step. During a very difficult time in my life, Mr. Mize made me feel understood and his honesty and compassion were invaluable. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for legal counsel.

Prior to having to seek out his help in 2013 I had no real experience with dealing with lawyers. I think it's a natural reaction to be a little intimidated at first, seeing as people always say such negative things about lawyers in general. However, after our initial meeting, I quickly realized that I had nothing to fear. I left our first consultation feeling much more empowered and protected than when I walked in. Mr. Mize is extremely intelligent in his field and this helped to put me at ease. My first time as his client I was going through a divorce. He made sure that I had all of the information that I needed and he asked several questions so he would have a very clear picture of the situation. He never judged or criticized, but always gave helpful and concerned advice. He was always prompt, friendly and professional with returning my calls, texts or emails. Mr. Mize never made me feel rushed or as if I were an inconvenience or a bother. The divorce itself was pretty clear-cut and went fairly smoothly. Two years later, I sought him out again because my ex-husband filed for child support modification and also wanted to modify our days with the kids. The days modification was not in the best interest of our children and would have negatively impacted their health and schooling. Mr. Mize knew how sensitive I was to this matter and took great care to ensure that I was well prepared for our trial. Although, as a lawyer, Mr. Mize knows what I could and couldn't have gained if I pushed hard enough, he let me make all of the decisions but was always there to advise me fairly when I asked. He never made me feel as though I had to attack or be sneaky to get what I wanted. We played a very fair and clean game and all was well in the end. I feel confident that he gave me the same level of respect that he would give a high profile case, and the same level of care that he would provide to a sibling. I felt as though Mr. Mize were more like a big brother to me than a lawyer. I felt safe and supported. He was always there when I needed him and he made what was a very stressful situation for me and my family, much easier to bear. Mr. Mize is a very serious and straight forward individual who gets right to the point and does not waste your time or money. When he smiles, you know it is genuine. You just have to see for yourself. I have and will continue to recommended Attorney Phillip Mize to any and everyone I know who is need of a great lawyer who truly cares about his clients.

Awesome Attorney. We retain her for all our family needs, she s helped us with adoptions and more. She s a very personable person. I can t say enough good things about her. She will tell you like it is and everything s she has told us to this date had come true in all our cases-if she doesn t think you will win a case, she tells you instead of telling you lies and taking money just to get your business as some attorneys do. If you want the best attorney in the area, call Sharon Massey! I recommend her to all my friends and family!!!!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Clarksville, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
