Arthur Bass has for several years now been the family law attorney for me and my family. I have referred friends and coworkers to him also. He does custody cases, adoptions, and juvenile cases, and from my experience, he does them very well. That's easy to understand since this is what he has been doing for 45 years now. He also does deeds, contracts, simple wills, and powers of attorney. In spite of all his knowledge and experience, his fees have always been reasonable and easy on my wallet.

My divorce case was not complicated, but I wanted an attorney who would do it the right way. I could have gotten the papers for a do-it-yourself divorce, but for the small fee that Mr. Bass indicated he would charge, it only made sense to let him handle it. It was all done correctly, professionally, and quickly., just like I was wanting. I got a good lawyer, and it didn't cost me that much.

I hired Mr. Bass to represent me in the adoption of my stepson. He was very professional throughout the case, which took much less time and cost me less in fees and costs than I had anticipated. Thanks to this lawyer and his excellent work, we are all family now, legally as well as in fact. I was very impressed with my lawyer and will be using him again soon to prepare wills for me and my wife.

I saw Mr. Bass in court a few weeks ago. He was my divorce lawyer almost three years ago, and I hadn't seen him in a while, so I watched him. He was just as good as ever, and that's very good. When he was my divorce lawyer, I could not have asked for a better one. He was knowledgeable, understanding, and good in court. He anticipated things and had me well prepared. I thought I came out great, and from what I saw just the other day, he's still the one you'll want on your side in a divorce contest.

I hired this lawyer when my son, along with some of his friends, got into some trouble after school. Mr. Bass was very professional, so that while my son learned a valuable lesson from his experience, the charges against him were ultimately dismissed. I thought this was a just and appropriate outcome given the facts of at what took place. This is a good lawyer for juvenile and other family law cases.

Divorce is never easy and fun, and I was nervous as it was my first time having to go through any legal process like this; coupled with the fact that my emotions were going a million different directions. My ex filed divorce proceedings on me back in 2007 and the lawyer I worked for at that time recommended Mr. Miller and one other attorney and I decided to go with Mr. Miller. The process took longer than it should have (due to my ex and his lawyer dragging things out) but in the end the case was successful for me. Mr. Miller was very thorough and frank and gave me a clear idea on what to expect, and made the whole process easier to go through. I would definitely recommend him to anyone!!!

Visiting a lawyer for a bankruptcy sounded like a challenging thing. Working with Rod Miller was a relief! There was no shame, no embarrassment, no "How did you get into this mess?" He was understanding, kind, and very helpful. He answered all my questions in a frank and informative manner. He was professional and walked me through the process without making me feel like he was pushing me into decisions. I thank God for men like Rod Miller!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Cleveland, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
