Pros
1
Highly knowledgeable and experienced lawyer who is skilled in court
“Jason is a great lawyer and he is extremely knowledgeable in the law. He is unbelievable on point in court. He does a great job at painting the truth for everyone to see. He has many years of experience which shows in his strategy.”
2
Honest and ethical approach, focused on justice rather than just winning
“He is not about doing underhanded things just to win a case. And he will fight for what truly is the best interest. He is not going to do something that would intentionally harm the individuals involved in the case just for the sake of winning. He cares about justice. He is a man of integrity, and that truly shows in his practice.”
3
Excellent communication and responsiveness, treating clients like family
“Jason did a great job through the process of explaining his reason, thinking, and legalities of what we were doing, why we were doing it, etc. His staff and he treated me like family. Jason is an extremely busy lawyer; for reason, hes amazing at what he does.”
Cons
1
Lack of responsiveness, failing to return client calls or follow up
“Jason never answers calls and he never calls back when clients call. He gives his cell phone nunber out like he's going to be easy to get ahold of but he's lying. He won't ever answer clients calls.”
2
Underperforming on cases, not accomplishing much despite high fees
“He also does not try that hard on cases and charges way too much. I have friends who spent like over $10 thousand and didnt get anything done. I dont know what he charges for but he just keeps asking for more money and he doesnt do anything.”
3
Delegating work to unprepared associates, leading to poor outcomes
“Jason relayed that his associate was prepared to handle my divorce day in court, just after Jason's associate confided in me that the associate had not read my case over, but just to answer the judges questions and all would be fine.”

In one of the most scariest times of my life, Cory and his team was an absolute Godsend. When issues came up, Cory would handle it immediately. Every scenario I was a nervous wreck, but after speaking with him each time, my nerves were calmed, without fail. I walked away feeling confident and heard. They are on top of everything. Overall good and honest people. Highly recommend.

Absolutely amazing lawyer and staff. I couldn’t be more pleased with what has transpired so far. I can’t tell you how difficult it is to find an attorney and staff of this caliber in this area. They are fantastic!

Hiring Jason Whatley is the worst choice I could have made. He dragged my case out for 3 years, fleeced me for over $22,000, told me he could get me out of paying child support for my disabled daughter even though I had no legal grounds, embarrassed himself in front of TWO Williamson County judges because he was glaringly unprepared, and more. I have no idea where he put my $22,000+ because it was definitely not hours he spent on my case. In the end, I had to pay my ex-wife’s attorney’s fees. Get someone else. ANYone else.

Cory Ricci represented me in a case in 2024 which was difficult for me as I had never been involved in this type lawsuit before. When we went to trial, Mr. Ricci was so prepared, competent and comforting that I wonder now why I was so nervous about it! His assistant, Mitzi, is also knowledgeable, patient and kind. I’ve represented clients in court thousands of times, but had never been a party myself. It gave me new insight into my clients’ anxiety about their cases and hearings. I would highly recommend this firm to anyone in need of legal services. Katy Zuccarello

Mark handled a case involving my minor son who was wrongfully accused of a crime. Mark worked diligently in our defense. He was in continual contact with updates on the case. Mark's presence at the pre-trial was masterful, cunning and direct. As the truth was exposed it resulted in the eventual dismissal of the case. He is the right attorney for everyone. Win or lose he will be fighting for you.

Outstanding Attorney Mark Free has been my attorney for for 15 years. I have referred many of my coworkers, friends, and my patients to him, as well. All clients I have referred to him were very pleased with his advice and his legal expertise. He is thorough, timely, reasonable in cost, and so far always successful in court. He is realistic in his predictions, but always over-performs. He is outstanding and has never failed to go above and beyond for my family and the clients I have referred. Highly recommend for family law and general legal matters.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Columbia, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
