I had additional questions on the fee agreement and his reply was "the process regarding! the fee agreement seems unnecessarily difficult. It may be best not to represent you. " Read between the lines.

Todd Sandahl handled my divorce with the utmost of respect and professionalism, and has a knack for communicating his legal guidance in a way that was easy for me to understand, given the high emotions of a marriage dissolving. His CPA background proved invaluable in terms of protecting my assets, as I was the breadwinner in the marriage. His communication was always quick and thorough, and his follow up was impeccable. I highly recommend Todd Sandahl for a divorce attorney....I am confident that my divorce ended with me getting an outstanding settlement given our financial situation.

I moved out of state and needed an attorney in TN to help extend an order of protection before it expires. Mr. Sandahl came recommended. I worked with his team some but most of my conversations were with Mr. Sandahl directly which surprised me because usually attorneys let their paralegal handle the concern if questions after initial consultation. I told him what I needed and he said we could try for a 5 year order of protection instead of a 1 year extension and he delivered a 5 year. I was comfortable sharing facts with him. He came across as very honest and trustworthy and I appreciated that. I've never needed an attorney before and I know I asked the same questions ten times out of worry and he answered me everytime and reassured me he would do what he could to help me and my kids. Because I live out of state now I wasn't able to meet him face to face, but through emails and calls he kept me at ease as he guided me thru the legal process. I know he handles a variety of cases and after the experience I had with him I will reach to him for any legal matters I encounter in Tennessee. He was genuine, kind, patient, and honest and really cared about the outcome of the case. I appreciate him and his team very much. Jill works in his office and she really helped me a lot too. She even stayed late one evening to make sure I was able to overnight a letter to them and had everything I needed. If you want an attorney who will actually take your calls and care about you and those impacted by the outcome of the case, Mr. Sandahl won't disappoint you. My kids and I all sleep easier thanks to his efforts and knowledge. I am thankful I chose him as my attorney. I truly don't believe I would've had the same positive outcome if I would've chosen some other attorneys I spoke with. Thank you for everything Mr. Sandahl!

Hired Megan for an issue with an HOA/developer. Megan drafted an amazing and thorough demands letter while also informing the parties that they would be held accountable if the demands were not met. Megan is a tenacious and overzealous attorney for her clients.

I had recently divorced and my daughter's custody arrangement was not going well. She was back and forth way too much and she wasn't happy. I wanted to go back to court for a better parenting plan but my original attorney was on a leave of absence. I spoke with several attorneys but each one of them told me "it was too soon" to go back to court. Emily took my case and in the mean time, my daughter was falling apart with the current plan. We went back to court and we are currently working on a new plan. Emily was a blessing to me and my daughter. I highly recommend her. She is a fighter and she has become a friend to us.

Todd and his staff helped us with our Chapter 13 and made a painful process seem easy. They were so understanding and helped us every step of the way. Todd is incredibly knowledgeable, personable and still truly a professional. He never once seemed judgmental about our situation and is always willing to offer assistance or answer any questions. His staff is equally great! They are prompt with any requests, they are so kind and helpful and we never felt like we were bothering them when we had questions or any needs related to our case. We HIGHLY recommend them. They are top notch, definitely the best of the best! Words cannot express our gratitude!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Franklin, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
