I reached out to Katie with a unique case as a father that was never married and living outside of TN. Katie was excellent to communicate with and highly professional over these last several years and helping me stay organized through what was a very emotional time and a complicated situation. When I needed guidance, documentation, had questions, and needed to verify facts of the law, Katie made sure I understood it in a clear way. I am very thankful for her help and helping build a strong case with my exact circumstances. I highly recommend you use her if you need a TN family attorney.

I highly recommend Katie and Zipper Law. As I was going through the most difficult life chapter I've ever experienced, she helped me understand and navigate the difficult terrain in order to best protect my child and myself. During emotional moments, she listened and politely shared the pros and cons based on what I was requesting along with the legal ramifications, then helped me determine the best plan of action for my case. She has a kind, caring heart, yet will also stand ground and take a firm stance. I will continue to seek Katie's counsel as needed and encourage anyone seeking legal help, particularly as it relates to divorce and properly crafting parenting plans, to consult with Katie. I am forever grateful to Katie and Lesa for their warmth, guidance and professionalism during the tough circumstances that led me to them.

Retaining an attorney is a very difficult process when it involves finding the proper counsel to protect your children, your future financial stability and having peace with the outcome of the legal matters you are working through. Katie Zipper Law was my choice given the legal battle I had before me. Unfortunately, I mistakenly chose this law firm. Particularly in regards to trusting Katie with large deposits meant for trial. Katie was trusted with a $5000 deposit meant for trial. Fortunately, my case did not need to go to trial, therefore the “deposit” meant for trial should have been refunded. Instead of holding the deposit for trial, as it was meant for, she chose to dwindle it was additional daily small amounts until there was almost nothing left. This deposit was on top of the beginning large deposit given to Katie to begin the case. Yes, Katie sent monthly statements of costs, however, these statements had a zero balance and nothing was paid. It one point, she asked that I make a payment of approximately $1800 and I did so. In the end, a small check of $400 was returned to me. Additional thoughts when it comes to the strength of this law firm. Lesa, Katie’s paralegal, was fabulous. She was kind informative and extremely helpful to my family and myself. In regards to Katie., She was very kind but was not able to be aggressive have the strength needed to better settle my case. In many instances, she just asked me what I wanted to do. I am not the attorney, I needed her counsel in order to make the best decisions. In retrospect, due to the lack of her strength and leadership, the best decision was not chosen. Additional, Katie attempted to withdraw from my case on 4 occasions without moving forward due to nervousness of the opposing counsel. Katie Zipper Law does not posses the ability to properly inform you of where your money is going, have strong leadership skills and the true strength to take on your case and work hard for you.

While I’m not an attorney, I suspect that my case was one of Ms. Zipper’s tougher ones. It was difficult for me, and contained quite difficult decisions. The case had nuances that I did not realize, even though it was about me and my family. However, Ms. Zipper’s thoughtfulness and guidance really helped me get what I wanted and needed. Her ideas about final management of my parenting plan were innovative, in my mind. Had I not followed her advice on this particular item, I likely would have suffered in the end. You see, I did not follow her advice on another major decision, and it came back to bite me. She advised me heavily against what I thought was right, but again, in the end, she knew what was best. In summary, I relied heavily on Ms. Zipper’s ideas, thoughts, and advice, and was guided in the right direction EVERY time. I felt like I had a friend calling me when her number popped up on my phone. Same for her assistant Lesa. Lesa was always supportive when we talked. Don’t let the size of the firm fool you; you will get top notch service here.

Hired Megan for an issue with an HOA/developer. Megan drafted an amazing and thorough demands letter while also informing the parties that they would be held accountable if the demands were not met. Megan is a tenacious and overzealous attorney for her clients.

I had recently divorced and my daughter's custody arrangement was not going well. She was back and forth way too much and she wasn't happy. I wanted to go back to court for a better parenting plan but my original attorney was on a leave of absence. I spoke with several attorneys but each one of them told me "it was too soon" to go back to court. Emily took my case and in the mean time, my daughter was falling apart with the current plan. We went back to court and we are currently working on a new plan. Emily was a blessing to me and my daughter. I highly recommend her. She is a fighter and she has become a friend to us.

Todd and his staff helped us with our Chapter 13 and made a painful process seem easy. They were so understanding and helped us every step of the way. Todd is incredibly knowledgeable, personable and still truly a professional. He never once seemed judgmental about our situation and is always willing to offer assistance or answer any questions. His staff is equally great! They are prompt with any requests, they are so kind and helpful and we never felt like we were bothering them when we had questions or any needs related to our case. We HIGHLY recommend them. They are top notch, definitely the best of the best! Words cannot express our gratitude!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Franklin, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
