My divorce began with a physical assault by my then husband. Needless to say I was traumatized and Rebecca not only listened calmly to me she walked me through the steps we needed to take. She was a fantastic advocate and worked diligently to assure I received what I was entitled to have.

I hired this attorney to handle my divorce a few years ago. I paid her $4000 up front. I told her exactly what we wanted to do and could she please file my divorce for me. She did nothing for 6 months and when she finally sent over my MDA, it was completely inaccurate and not at all what we had discussed. She did not listen to anything I had to say and literally tried to get me to do things to drag my case on so she could charge more fees. Her communication was horrible. I eventually fired her and lost all my money. I had to hire someone else who also charged me $2000. Ms. Byrd even sent a bill after I fired her to collect for a copying fee for my records which I gave her at the beginning. Do not waste your time with this attorney. All she cares about is taking your money.

I have used Rebecca more than once and have been very pleased with the outcome. She has always been available for a console when I had questions or concerns. She is well respected in the court system in Williamson county. I have learned you never go to court without a good attorney, and I consider her one of the best. I hope I don’t need legal services again, but if I do, she’s the first I would call.

I hired Ms Byrd because I understood that she was knowledgeable in a particular subject pertaining to international laws. She was supposed to help me through a divorce and settlement case, and while I cannot go into the details of how she failed to accomplish this, I can say that I walked away from the situation feeling that she never had my interests in mind. It’s so important when choosing a lawyer to make sure that you are with a legal professional who is working on your behalf, and fairly for you. Her legal fees after nearly a month of work were so high I was unable to pay them upfront after she sent me my first invoice. To add insult to this situation, she then became aggressive, and threatened me legally when I asked to be put on a payment plan. When going through a divorce, choose someone who will work with you and for you, not someone who is looking to rack up extremely high financial fees in a subject they actually know nothing about. She should also have let me know when my retainer ran out so quickly and informed me before adding another $15,000 to the bill. Truly it was an awful experience and this should be seen by anyone considering hiring Rebecca Byrd.

Divorcing after 30 years of marriage is a very daunting experience. I needed someone to listen, advise and support me. I found that person in Rebecca Byrd. She guided me through each step of the process not only with sound knowledge, but also comfort and compassion. She is diligent in her preparation and presents the case with tenacity. Seventeen years after the divorce was final my former husband petitioned the court, saying he had overpaid alimony. Rebecca was the first person I called. I was living in another state at the time, but she was thorough in her findings and kept me up to date on all matters. The case was settled in mediation with the outcome in my favor. Thank you again, Rebecca Byrd

Hired Megan for an issue with an HOA/developer. Megan drafted an amazing and thorough demands letter while also informing the parties that they would be held accountable if the demands were not met. Megan is a tenacious and overzealous attorney for her clients.

I had recently divorced and my daughter's custody arrangement was not going well. She was back and forth way too much and she wasn't happy. I wanted to go back to court for a better parenting plan but my original attorney was on a leave of absence. I spoke with several attorneys but each one of them told me "it was too soon" to go back to court. Emily took my case and in the mean time, my daughter was falling apart with the current plan. We went back to court and we are currently working on a new plan. Emily was a blessing to me and my daughter. I highly recommend her. She is a fighter and she has become a friend to us.

Todd and his staff helped us with our Chapter 13 and made a painful process seem easy. They were so understanding and helped us every step of the way. Todd is incredibly knowledgeable, personable and still truly a professional. He never once seemed judgmental about our situation and is always willing to offer assistance or answer any questions. His staff is equally great! They are prompt with any requests, they are so kind and helpful and we never felt like we were bothering them when we had questions or any needs related to our case. We HIGHLY recommend them. They are top notch, definitely the best of the best! Words cannot express our gratitude!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Franklin, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
