Pros

Caring and patient attorney who goes above and beyond for clients
“Attorney Cullen Wojcik went above and beyond for my son who was unfortunately in need of having representation. He is by far the most caring and patient attorney I've ever had the pleasure of working with.”
2
Effective and prompt in handling cases, able to get charges dropped
“The next morning called and spoke with Mr. Wojcik he handled my case professionally and promptly and within a couple of days he had all charges dropped and case closed.”
3
Personable and communicative, keeps clients informed and responsive
“He was not a fast talking, arrogant attorney and when he said he'll get back with you at an appointed time.... He wastes no time with doing so.”
4
Excellent legal knowledge and expertise, able to get favorable outcomes
“Josh really knows the legal system; he was able to keep me informed about how the process works. He answered my myriad questions about "why this?" or "can we do that?". Josh gave me a comfort level about my case, even when everything looked like gloom and doom!”
5
Truly cares about clients and their wellbeing, goes above and beyond
“Josh is so much more than an attorney to me. He has literally became part of my family's lives. I would never even consider another attorney after having him. He will listen, not rush you, get back with you and most of all support you all the way.”
Cons
1
Lack of responsiveness and communication from some attorneys
“I have been waiting weeks for him to reach out after I called their office three times to have him call me. Anytime I needed answers, I would never get a return call.”
2
Inconsistent quality of service from different attorneys at the same firm
“Their office secretary always answered the phone when I needed to call and ask a question. However, my attorney never returned any of my calls and only called me the day of court.”

Acquiring a lawyer for anything is never an easy task. I was lucky to find and work with Jonathan Cooper at KnoxDefense. Mr. Cooper is a knowledgeable counselor, respected attorney in the community and a class act. I felt more at ease with my situation once we started working together. If you need a lawyer in his field of expertise, he is highly recommended - 5 stars!!

Josh made our very difficult situation so much easier. He took time to explain each step of the process to us. Fought for our best interest with great success. Hope to never need his services again, but would not hesitate to call him if the need arose. Highly recommend.

Sometimes life throws you curve balls and forces you to step outside of your comfort zone. Looking up and finding a legal team can be overwhelming to say the least, but if you find yourself looking for the best, look no further than Knox Defense. From the receptionist, legal assistant, to the after hours call center, never did we feel like our needs or concerns were left unaddressed. Attorney M. Jeffrey Whitt is by far the best of the best. It is evident that Mr. Whitt takes pride in what he does and the people he serves. His knowledge, dedication, drive and determination to see that you are given top notch legal representation is apparent within moments of meeting him. His professional demeanor instills a sense of relief as you know he will do everything in his power to work for you. Yet, he still finds it imperative to connect with you on a personal level, since let’s be honest, we are all human and could certainly use a friend especially when life feels like it has been turned upside down. Should you find yourself needing legal defense, I HIGHLY encourage you contacting Knox Defense and asking to speak with Mr. Whitt. This is one decision, I will forever be thankful for.

I think it’s safe to say that requiring an attorney is something we all hope to never be in the position of needing. However, should that need arise, I could not recommend someone more perfect than M. Jeffrey Whitt. Mr. Whitt is a man of honor, integrity and professionalism. Yet, he is compassionate about acknowledging you not simply as a client, but also as a person with true feelings, emotions and fears. Putting the right man in place to fight for you is something you should not take lightly, and an act that should prompt you to do your research. This is a man that I would hands-down recommend to stand in your defense. An attorney by profession, but a friend for life.

Preston Pierce is hands-down the best Child Support attorney in Knox County and the surrounding areas. My case was a complicated case and the odds were not in my favour legally speaking and due to poor health and other pressing issues in my life. Mr. Pierce took over my case and just in our first court hearing, he secured what, by all accounts, was an impossible victory. Preston Pierce is a tenacious, tough, experienced, and thorough attorney. He takes the time to understand all of the nuances of his clients' situation; this is good because every detail matters. Preston Pierce is a 10 out of 5 stars in my book. Yes, 10. Do not go into court without him in your corner.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Knoxville, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
