Pros
1
Excellent communication and responsiveness
“Keith answers his phone calls, follows-up with e-mail, takes the time to discuss the case, then handles it. His follow-up protocol and patience is exceptional.”
2
Knowledgeable and experienced in handling complex cases
“Has been several years since I first consulted Keith for a particular (and peculiar) situation. Because of a nondisclosure agreement I can't go into details. Keith was practically the only attorney in Knoxville who would handle my case because of the oddity of the situation and settled at 100% to my satisfaction.”
3
Achieves outstanding results for clients
“Keith has a lot of experience, is a hard worker, understands the big picture, is able to simplify complex ideas into simple words and has repeatedly gotten outstanding results for his clients.”
4
Excellent litigation skills and ability to win challenging cases
“I was in a terrible situation when Keith came to my rescue and helped me win my case. He knows the law, has superior litigation skills, and helped me understand the legal process.”
5
Long-term trusted advisor for both personal and business matters
“Mr. Stewart has represented me for 15 years. He has always provided excellent counsel in a professional and trustworthy manner. His breadth of experience has been useful to every aspect of my business and personal life.”
Cons
1
Rude and unprofessional behavior from the assistant
“I was met with a short/hateful behavior from his assistant. [...] If he received my emails but didn't want to answer all he had to do was say so and I would have taken my business elsewhere.”
2
Lack of responsiveness and communication at times
“I sent an email on 6/23, 6/24, and the 6/26 with no response. [...] When he called back I was asked in an extremely rude manor 'what do I owe you', 'I don't have to reply', and 'I received you emails, what do you want' just to name a few.”

The team at Sharp and Attanasio were lifesavers for my family during the challenging experience of dealing with my brother's unexpected death. As the oldest, I was thrust into the position of being the executor to his estate, something that no one should have to navigate while dealing with the grief that follows the death of a loved on. Robin and Ron were there with me the entire time with compassion and kindness. They helped me overcome the difficulties that occur when a loved one dies without a will while allowing me the space to grieve. We have since used them for other both personal and professional situations. It is a relief to have them on our team.

Do not use him. He has sold his soul to big business and corporations. I contacted him regarding taking my case which involved severe police brutality and UT hospital. He said he could not go against UT hospital due to a conflict of interest. I told him that every attorney I've contacted has refused to help me, due to politics. He suggested going to Nashville. I'm disgusted with him and every other pathetic attorney that refuses to go up against big business. I told him that he needs a different profession. I will get an out of county or state attorney.

Very disappointed in Ron who started off great and fizzled out leaving us hanging. Might be a good personal injury lawyer but he knows very little about Mechanics Liens or the definition of "Improvement ". When I showed him he was wrong in the State statute, he quit representing us and left us high and dry. I mistakenly thought he might accept the fact that he was wrong and apologize for not helping us in the year time frame, but I was wrong.

Mr. McBride helped my sister and me escape from a dreadful situation and aided us in returning to our home. He was always available for questions, kept us well informed as the situation progressed, and kept in great contact afterward to make certain that we were well cared for in our new environment.

David went above and beyond making our daughter’s adoption experience wonderful. He was quick to answer any and all questions we had. The whole process was quick, and special. We remember when David said upon consultation , “This is a celebration”. We knew then he was the perfect lawyer for us. Thank you David for all you did for our family! Forever grateful.

Dave Otten went above and beyond helping me sell my house. We ran into a few issues during the process, but he was extremely helpful every step of the way. I couldn’t have asked for a better agent. He even took care of things for me while I was out of the country! He was very patient with me and helped me navigate the entire process as a first-time seller. I would 100% recommend Dave to anyone looking for a real estate agent!

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Knoxville, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
