My wife and I petitioned to gain custody of our child, We used Mr. Haupt and I was extremely impressed with how professional he was. I tried to do it by myself at first but it really made a huge difference once he was involved.

Mr. Haupt was excellent. He took a situation I thought I would not be able to win and was able to do so. John was easy to get into contact with and answered my questions. He was upfront with me which I really appreciated. Would recommend.

I was wrongfully terminated from a local government position. Because it was government it was very complex. After consulting with Mr. David Burkhalter and his son Alex they took my case. They worked together like hand in glove. They kept me updated and aware of things that would be upcoming. I was never “caught of guard” in the process of mandatory wait times or replies from the defendants. They were completely in charge of my situation and had the answers before the defendants could ask the questions. It was amazing watching how prepared Alex and the Burkhalter firm was. Alex was wise and professional above his years. Alex was always very honest with me and let me know what to expect at the next turn. I would absolutely recommend Alex and the Burkhalter Firm to anyone looking for the Best of the Best.

Alex Burkhalter earned my respect and confidence from the very beginning. My case was a wrongful termination against a municipality, which involved uncommon, technical environmental concepts. Just to understand the facts of this situation, the entire staff had to learn what must have seemed like a new language. Not only did they learn the environmental concepts and the proper, technical way to speak them, they became proficient in the specific details. Although I was certainly pleased in his understanding and adaptation to the language of my case, it wasn’t his proficiency in the details of this situation that impressed me the most. It was that each and every one of the staff demonstrated a very personal interest in my well-being and in correcting the environmental issues this case would address. From our first meeting, I knew that Alex Burkhalter was as concerned with these environmental issues as I was. I also knew that this firm was deeply concerned for my personal well-being. This review falls far short of expressing my gratitude for this well-accomplished firm. To you reading this review, I say - this law firm and its entire staff are the most dedicated, professional and personable you could hope for. To Alex and the Burkhalter Law Firm, I say “Thank you” from the depths of my truth.

Alex Burkhalter is the epitome of an attorney and a gentleman. His determination to do the highest quality work for his clients is undeniable. My complex wrongful termination suits required many hours of research and fact finding. He was relentless in his pursuit of justice in this case. At all times, he was respectful to me and made me feel confident and comfortable. He also made several positive suggestions to the Sr. partner that strengthened my claim, and I am happy to say that David (I)) defeated Goliath (a large corporation) thanks to the hard work, diligence and dedication of the Burkhalters. Alex is still young in his career, but he displays the attributes of a seasoned attorney. He was invaluable to my case. I cannot say enough good things about this young man, who places the well-being of his clients first and foremost. I was always at ease and calm with him. He is not afraid to stand up to a Goliath!! I would recommend him wholeheartedly to any client with a work-related case.

Scott Frith was my son's lawyer in a very serious case with felony charges that could have resulted in many years of incarceration. Scott was very impressive in how he utilized many different resources ranging from a private investigator to a forensic psychologist. He was very thorough and meticulous in his representation of my son and the results were far better than expected. Scott was always accessible and kept us readily informed as to what was taking place. If you want a competent, compassionate lawyer with a tireless work ethic who will give his all to give you the best representation possible, I highly recommended choosing Scott Frith to be your lawyer.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Knoxville, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
