In my opinion/was my experience. He over-charged for the work, and took money for work he didn’t conduct at all.

*reposting because my first review was deleted, and that’s not fair, also, I fired him and hired another attorney and they had the case wrapped up in under a month* I hired Mr. Hinton to take care of an adoption and a will last August using my MetLife legal plan. Since then, he has yet to make any progress on my adoption case whatsoever and neglected to even begin on my will even though I’ve sent him my information 2-3 separate times. I’ve had to call his office and email him multiple times to even get a response. I’ve been told that he would call me back at certain times and he never does. He was supposed to send paperwork to the biological father months ago, but when asked if he’s sent it yet I always get a response along the lines of “I’ll send it this week” or “I sent it and it was returned to me”. If he was getting mail returned to him, he should have let me know instead of sitting on my case instead and not providing me with any updates. He is extremely unorganized and unprofessional. I would recommend going elsewhere if you want your case handled in a timely manner. I’ve attached an email from him, so you can see how unprofessional he actually is. This email is from December. It is now February and the paperwork still has never been sent out. If he had an issue with this, he should have called me instead of sitting on it for months with no progress. Even though in this email he says that he sent out the paperwork, he never actually did to my knowledge. Don’t waste your money, going through legal issues is already stressful enough, don’t let this guy make it worse for you. I’ve had to hire a new attorney and I look like an idiot now having to restart the whole process with bio-dad.

Would never recommend. Gave a great first impression but took our money and never completed the work. Wouldn't return calls. Has not refunded money as requested.

I received a speeding ticket for 77 MPH in a 55 MPH (Unknown to me) zone late one night leaving Windrock Mountain after a weekend of riding four wheelers heading back home to Georgia. Although the officer was very kind and polite, he did not helped me out as I hoped he would given that I am unfamiliar to the area and the speed zones, it was late and I was the only automobile on the road and so on. I am young, 23, a law student in Georgia and I did not want this to affect my record. After extensive research, I came across Mr. Hinton's profile and gave him a call. He was very concise and straightforward with me and seemed very confident in his ability to get some reduction for this. Mr. Hinton advised me to best stay focused on my finals and know that he has this under control and that I should have no need to worry. I know that many attorneys tell you what you want to hear at first, like car salesmen is my analogy, and then they deliver the bad news to why they couldn't get you what they had hoped for. Well, today, I received notification from Mr. Hinton that he was able to get my speed dropped to a 60MPH in a 55MPH zone! That was well more than I expected, I only needed it to be 64mph or under. Obviously, Mr. Hinton knows what he is doing, who he is working with and maintains an amazing relationship with the courts. I am extremely satisfied in Mr. Hinton's work. Not only would I recommend him to future potential clients but I would undoubtedly hire him again if needed. Thank you again Mr. Hinton for the quick and professional results. You have exceeded my expectations and are a great guy. Matt.

This man is a legend in the courts. He fought for me & genuinely cares. He gets down to the nitty gritty details of things & isn't afraid of the DA's. Always answers his phone, no matter when you call him. Very knowledgeable & trustworthy. As long as you're straight up & honest with him, he will do whatever he can to make sure you're taken care of. He has recently had some health issues, so I think he's about to be done with his career in the courts. The young man he is "training" now will hopefully listen to every word of wisdom this man gives him. If he's half as good as Butch, he's doing great!!

I've known Kelly and Matt for all my life. They are fantastic attorneys. My child is very comfortable with them too. So that gives me peace of mind when my time comes

I’ve been trying to get information about a property associated with an estate where this law firm is the executor. I been calling for over nine months and have not been able to get any information (or even a return phone call). Its pretty frustrating and is extremely poor customer service! I usually leave only good reviews and shy away from the negative ones but this one was note worthy so had to put it out there…

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lenoir City, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
