Suzanne and her team were wonderful. If you need an attorney you need to contact her. The response to my questions or concerns were always quick. Since I've never gone through something like this before it's exactly what I needed. I didn't want to sit and wait for answers. There was so much to deal with Suzanne and her team were on top of everything. She would let me know if she was going to be out of town but that didn't slow down her replying to my emails. Just outstanding service and respect from the entire staff. She was also a calming influence when the other attorney was slow to move things forward. She could tell I was getting anxious. Suzanne explained what was going on and politely reached out to the other attorney to move the process forward. I always felt like they cared about me and wanted to make this a less stressful process and they did.

I have been blessed with her expertise, her compassion and her knowledge. Her team and her firm have made a huge difference in my life. She defended my case PROBONO as she felt I was wronged regarding my kids being internationally abducted by my exhusband. She was strict while very compassionate . She responded my every question and taught me to protect my rights as a left behind parent. She never wavered in her knowledge. Everything was on time . She and her team are worth every penny and more. I could never repay her. My boys are back home , happy, healty and safe. Highly recommended.

Suzanne and her firm quickly become like family. They do their best to keep fees down (she's not a magician, and it can be expensive, but that depends on how the opposing team acts and how much work you're willing to do on your own, how organized you are-and how well you LISTEN). She'll be upfront and honest about what can happen, even if it's not what you want to hear. She won't promise something if she's not certain she can deliver. She and her firm are some of the few attorneys in the Memphis area who understand what to expect and what to do in a domestic violence situation. My case was both contentious and complicated (involving 2 states), but she took charge after being hired mid-case and worked at warp speed (as far as courts are concerned). I never once set foot in a court room until the final hearing where my divorce was granted. I still consult with her and her associate as things come up, as I still have a little guy to protect. Landers Firm is the ONLY family law firm in Memphis that I would personally recommend. My only regret was that I didn't find her until after I had already filed.

We used Ms. Landers as a meditor in my recent divorce and she was excellent. Professional, knowledgeable, firm. Very glad we used her. We were able to reach an agreement that everyone was able to live with and avoid a trial which is what it's all about it! I highly recommend her!

I was referred to Ms. Grice by another attorney. That was one of the best referrals I have ever received and am so glad that I acted on it by contacting her. The other four attorneys that I had been referred to never even returned my call. She got me in the office, answered email and phone calls in a very quick and professional manner while never losing her ability to remain human and care for her clients. She helped me resolve a situation that had previously been tied up in court and with multiple attorneys that had been going on for almost 15 years. In a matter of 3 months she had resolved the issue and the issue was closed permanently. I'm very thankful to have been directed to Ms. Grice. If I ever need to employ an attorney again, it will her.

Mr. Jones is a very talented lawyer and it was pleasure having him represent me dealing with my mother’s estate. He kept me informed about everything he needed to complete the work and was available for all questions I had. I was impressed with his work ethic, personality and recommended him to another relative seeking representation. This was my first time hiring a lawyer and it was a very good experience. 5 stars.

Scott has proven to be professional while providing legal counsel on matters. His communication skills, both, written and verbal, leaves you with a good understanding of what your legal options are. He gives you multiple options , both pros and cons, on his legal approaches in presenting your case. But, he let you have the final decision. He doesn’t hesitate to inform you of his limited knowledge in areas outside of his expertise, but he gives referrals to others who do has the expertise. One of his major skills other than legal, is his ability to relate.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Memphis, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
