I hired Taylor in April 2023, sharing with her that my top priority was securing the majority of the year with my children. From the beginning, Taylor was candid, telling me she couldn’t guarantee outcomes but that she would fight diligently for my case. I expressed my desire to avoid court, and thanks to Taylor’s expertise, we managed to settle everything through mediation, sparing me from ever stepping into a courtroom. My divorce was high conflict, and Taylor was a constant source of comfort. She showed remarkable patience, especially when my mother passed away just weeks before our first mediation session. Taylor compassionately offered to pause the proceedings, but respecting my wishes, she continued to push forward. Taylor’s dedication and diligence were evident as she fought to secure everything I deserved, from primary custody of my children to retaining the family home. Her strategic approach and unwavering support made all the difference. For anyone considering hiring an attorney, my advice is to be completely honest with them from start to finish. Integrity is crucial, and Taylor exemplified this every step of the way. She was worth every penny, delivering on every single request I had. Taylor’s tenacity and dedication to her clients are unparalleled. She fights for her clients like a Soldier on the battlefield. I have no regrets and complete respect for her work. Keep an eye on Taylor—she’s destined for great success!

My divorce could be categorized as ‘high-conflict’ because I was dealing with a ‘covert passive aggressive narcissist’ and at that time I did not fully understand what I was up against and the person I was really dealing with. From the beginning with Leigh Taylor and Taylor, I had their unwavering support and we worked as a team. I am extremely grateful to both for navigating me through an already tough situation made exponentially worse by former spouse's behavior and actions/inaction. Former spouse cycled through 3 attorneys - I consider myself fortunate to find these two from start to end. Leigh Taylor and Taylor bring extensive experience, are detail-oriented, timely and made sure the products put in front of the court were polished and ironclad. I have great respect for both and sincerely appreciate everything they did for me. Thank you!

I hired Taylor Oyaas in the summer of 2022 for ongoing post-divorce custody proceedings. I filed for divorce in 2011 and I've had a lawyer pass away, verbally abuse me, retire, and take a sabbatical. After my previous lawyer announced her sabbatical, I asked her point-blank, "Who are the best female family law lawyers in Memphis?" Without hesitation, she referred me to Leigh Taylor White and Taylor Oyaas. From my first consultation to our last phone call and every step in-between, they have demonstrated professionalism, empathy, expertise, determination, and a killer instinct. They have guided me through a challenging situation and every recommendation they have made has been spot-on. Taylor has spent extensive amounts of time researching precedent and not only making legal recommendations, but explaining why she made them and how they could potentially impact my case and my children. For the first time in 13 years, I am confident in my attorneys and believe these custody proceedings will finally be resolved. They have restored my faith in humanity and the legal profession and inspired me to leverage my experiences to try and help others in my position. My daughter is a junior in college and Leigh Taylor and Taylor have inspired her to pursue a career in family law because they have had such a powerful impact on her life. Hire this woman. Like another Taylor I'm a fan of, she is fearless.

Emily is helping me with my U-Visa through the Community Legal Center here in Memphis. Once she got all my documentation she filled the applications, send them out and now after my biometrics appointment I'm just waiting. She explained everything to me and answered all my questions. I'm so grateful the Community Legal Center took my case and assigned Emily as my attorney and once I get my EAD I will be donating to the CLC. There's no way I can pay what the CLC and Emily have done for me.

Ms. Wilson represented me in the 90's. I was young and sick, and wasn't up for much stress. Ms. Wilson was a God send. She was very compassionate, as well as professional. She made me feel like all her attention was on giving me the best representation I could have, and she did just that! Of course, she was successful! I will always remember and appreciate her. I wish I could find her phone number even now for future references!

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Memphis, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
