Felicia Corbin Johnson was my divorce lawyer I hired. She did a wonderful job and got my divorce very fast. I would use her again if needed. She is now a Judge in Memphis. I have another case that she is over. If you need a good lawyer then I highly recommend her. Everyone working in her office was always nice and helpful.

I agree with all of the negative reviews. I hired Mrs. Corbin Johnson in 2007 and got the total runaround the entire time until she thought I owed her some more money which I didn't. I finally got so fed up that I stopped the proceedings but not without already having paid her about $1500.00 and my divorce still isn't final. I am so uneasy about trying another attorney after such a bad experience with her.

I would not recommend her to my worst enemy. She is extremely unorganized and shows up to every court appearance late. She is never on time and nor is she ever prepared for your case. However she is quick to ask you for money for court appearances. Those fees are $750 for each court appearance. Which does not include her fees for actually going to trial and incidentals. She does not do any leg work for your case. You generally have to do it all yourself. Seems as if you are just paying someone to show up to court in your behalf who isn't prepared and who could truly care less about your case. She hardly ever returns phone calls. You will always have to go through Ms. Greenway, who will never get your message correct. To get the status of your case is almost impossible. She seems to take on a lot clients, take their money and give them very little representation in return. Just enough to say she did something. And you get very little in return for what you paid for. If she would actually slow down and focus on a few cases at a time, she would be a great lawyer. She is knowledgeable. I will not take that away from her.

I hired Mrs Johnson to represent me in my divorce and support cases in July of 2011. The day of my support hearing I see her at the court house and she asks what I'm doing there. She was there for another case in a different court room. During a recess in that court she found her way to the court room I was in only to be called away a short time later. When she finally returned I was hit with child support of $956 a month and $300 a month alimony. After that she wanted me to pay her another $750 to appeal it. In our discussion on me not being able to afford that and survive she told me that I made over $60000 a year so she did not feel sorry for me. She (Mrs Johnson), my ex, and my ex's attorney got what they wanted. I lost my home of 16 years and my ex moved from the house she lived in, in Cordova (that she claimed she couldn't pay her bills at) to one twice that size in Oakland that cost $170,000+.

Mr. Sandifer is a fantastic divorce and separation attorney. He took over my case and assured me that we would receive exactly what we requested. Mr. Sandifer is very good at communicating and making sure you are prepared for court visit. Mr. Sandifer made me feel comfortable through the entire process having this been my first time dealing with divorce. I must say it was a pleasure working with him.

Mr. Jones is a very talented lawyer and it was pleasure having him represent me dealing with my mother’s estate. He kept me informed about everything he needed to complete the work and was available for all questions I had. I was impressed with his work ethic, personality and recommended him to another relative seeking representation. This was my first time hiring a lawyer and it was a very good experience. 5 stars.

Scott has proven to be professional while providing legal counsel on matters. His communication skills, both, written and verbal, leaves you with a good understanding of what your legal options are. He gives you multiple options , both pros and cons, on his legal approaches in presenting your case. But, he let you have the final decision. He doesn’t hesitate to inform you of his limited knowledge in areas outside of his expertise, but he gives referrals to others who do has the expertise. One of his major skills other than legal, is his ability to relate.

I was referred to Ms. Grice by another attorney. That was one of the best referrals I have ever received and am so glad that I acted on it by contacting her. The other four attorneys that I had been referred to never even returned my call. She got me in the office, answered email and phone calls in a very quick and professional manner while never losing her ability to remain human and care for her clients. She helped me resolve a situation that had previously been tied up in court and with multiple attorneys that had been going on for almost 15 years. In a matter of 3 months she had resolved the issue and the issue was closed permanently. I'm very thankful to have been directed to Ms. Grice. If I ever need to employ an attorney again, it will her.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Memphis, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
