Mr Carter is great. I had a complicated probation violation case as another county was involved and he did what my other attorneys either would not or could not do. I was transferred from another county and should have been realeased from Davidson county when I arrived as both counties were running my time concurrent, but when I got to Davidson county I was told my time was consecutive (which means a sentence must be served in its entirety after you complete the previous sentence) despite my original deal of everything being concurrent. My previous paid attorney said everything was taken care of and my time would get calculated and I would get my jail credits, I soon found out that was not the case when my former attorney told me he couldn’t do anything. Thinking I had to finish another 11/29 in jail after I had just finished my sentence for the same incident in a different county I decided to reach out to see if that was correct. So I hired Tim, and was completely relieved when I spoke to him. He was completely straightforward and always kept me informed. My other attorneys did not keep me in the loop like he did, and he managed to accomplish what they said they could not. Thus, I was released from jail with the possibility of being off probation in 6 months. I highly recommend him as he’s straightforward and diligent and keeps you informed, which if you have ever experienced the legal system you will know that’s one of the biggest issues in regards to your relationship with a attorney. Thanks Tim.

I had the distinct pleasure of working with Mr. Carter. His professionalism, demeanor, and knowledge enhanced is enthusiastic attitude. Considering the difficult situation that was presented to him, he took the task head on and worked diligently to serve our needs. Just because an attorney expects top dollar for their services, doesn't mean they are worth the work they give. But Mr. Carter was fair and top notch above the rest. I will absolutely contact him for future business and will continue to refer him to my peers.

Tim is very upfront and a man of his word. He kept me well informed and went the extra mile to make sure I felt comfortable in the courtroom. He is also extremely organized and prompt. Aslso, hebstuck with me until we got the plea bargain we hoped for. From experience using other attorneys, these traits aren't as easy to come across as you'd think. Thank you for all your help these past few months Tim!!!

Best attorney ever. She took every call and returned every email. Explained everything in a manor in which I could understand. Sat down with me 2 weeks before my social security hearing and went thru medical records with and provided honest feedback. She wrote a brief for the judge the day of my hearing. She was well organized and ready to fight for me. I was made to feel like I was the most important person. Love her spunk and drive along with her big heart. Thanks for the wonderful job you did for me Ann. You will never be forgotten. Susan Dole

I’ve hired Ann Tycer to represent me in my fight for disability benefits after finding many recommendations for her, but even those did not do justice to her professionalism she gracefully applies while making you feel like a beloved family member. She has a way of connecting on a human level, you do not feel like just a client but a person she truly wants to help. She has taken the anxiety out of this difficult venture and that alone places her at 100 stars in my book!

Great firm. They represent me on my will, trusts, business, etc. They have always been good with me. They care. My primary attorney is William Harbison, one of the partners, and he is a great guy. I'm very fortunate to have found him and this firm. Plus, he knows many people in other areas, that he can recommend. I found my accountant through him. I enjoy working with him and others at this firm. They care about their clients.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Nashville, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
