It is almost never a pleasant time in one’s life when an attorney is needed, and that was the case with my situation. I was injured when a driver, who had celebrated her 16th birthday just two weeks before the accident, hit my car while I was standing behind it to retrieve something from the trunk. It was a freak accident, and it changed my life forever. The time that followed this incident was full of stress and ongoing health issues. It would have been easy to despair if I had not had the support of this attorney.

I used the law firm of Joe Dughman in my personal injury case. It is rarely a pleasant time in one's life when an attorney is needed, and that was certainly true of my situation. I was injured when a driver, who had celebrated her 16th birthday just two weeks before the accident, hit my car while I was standing behind it to retrieve something from the trunk. It was a freak accident, and it changed my life forever. The time that followed this incident was full of stress and ongoing medical problems. What should have been a simple broken leg has failed to heal, and the march to recovery has seen more pitfalls than progress. It would have been easy to despair if I had not had the support of Mr. Dughman. The first aspect to his representation was the convenience. My daughter took me to see him in person one time, but that was probably more for me than for him. After that, all of our communication was electronic, phone, or regular mail, which made it much easier for me to navigate. Secondly, this was not a case in which Mr. Dughman had hopes for a large financial recovery. To the contrary, I was distraught to learn I was grossly underinsured, and it is my understanding the young lady who hit me had minimum coverage as well. It was not my wish to sue her or her family, although I have questioned this decision many times. Mr. Dughman supported me and pressed on. As the first year passed and I was not healed, I began to learn about subrugation. This is a process by which my health insurance companies demanded refund payments on the benefits they had paid out. They were entitled to this because the accident was not "my fault," and yet they had paid out thousands of dollars. With two weeks in the hospital, two major surgeries, weeks of home health care and physical therapy, the bills were astronomical. If Mr. Dughman had not negotiated on my behalf with these mammoth insurance companies, I would have owed them money in the end. Somehow he got them to accept partial repayment, a feat I would have never been able to do for myself. The stress of owing that money and my body's unwillingness to heal took an emotional toll on me. I have never heard one word of apology from the young woman who hit me. Long after the Statute of Limitation on a possible lawsuit expired, I asked Mr. Dughman if I could write to her. He assured me it would make no difference in any "legal" sense, but he encouraged me to write her if it would make me feel better. In the end, I wrote to her parents, thinking they could decide it the letter was appropriate. Still, there has been no contact. Through all of my dealings with Attorney Dughman, I was basically an emotional wreck. He was constant, professional, and very, very skilled in his work. It is my hope to never, never need him again, but if I do, it is my sincere wish that he will represent me again.

When I think of accident or personal injury attorneys, my mental image is not a positive one. I looked for an attorney who is professional, who cares, and has integrity. That is precisely how I see Attorney Joe Dughman. After interviewing 3 different attorneys, I selected his law firm. Joe is definitely sincere and has an incredible track record in obtaining high settlements. He won my case (settled) without having to go to court. The legal process and auto accidents, in general, can be stressful, to say the least. I have recommended this attorney to others without thinking twice. I consider him one of the best in Nashville.

Joe was a godsend to me and my family. From the minute we met him, we knew Joe would help our mother in her Nashville nursing home abuse and injury case. He was very compassionate and made me feel at ease despite my constant anxiety over our case. He kept me informed every step of the way. He is very knowledgeable of the law and provides the very best legal representation possible. I would not hesitate to call on him again should the need arise.

Attorney Dughman is an excellent lawyer that we used in our negligence or wrongful death case. I was fortunate enough to be referred to him after my mother passed away due to negligence in a nursing home facility. Mr. Dughman has a very methodical common sense approach when investigating a case. Mr. Dughman has shown nothing but compassion for myself and my family during a very difficult time and is a joy to work with. I would highly recommend Joe to anyone needing representation in his field of practice.

Despite being a seemingly busy firm, I felt like a priority and that my time was valued. Justin took the time to understand my situation and tailored their approach to meet my needs. Their personalized attention made a significant difference in comparison to other companies.

Best attorney ever. She took every call and returned every email. Explained everything in a manor in which I could understand. Sat down with me 2 weeks before my social security hearing and went thru medical records with and provided honest feedback. She wrote a brief for the judge the day of my hearing. She was well organized and ready to fight for me. I was made to feel like I was the most important person. Love her spunk and drive along with her big heart. Thanks for the wonderful job you did for me Ann. You will never be forgotten. Susan Dole

I’ve hired Ann Tycer to represent me in my fight for disability benefits after finding many recommendations for her, but even those did not do justice to her professionalism she gracefully applies while making you feel like a beloved family member. She has a way of connecting on a human level, you do not feel like just a client but a person she truly wants to help. She has taken the anxiety out of this difficult venture and that alone places her at 100 stars in my book!

Great firm. They represent me on my will, trusts, business, etc. They have always been good with me. They care. My primary attorney is William Harbison, one of the partners, and he is a great guy. I'm very fortunate to have found him and this firm. Plus, he knows many people in other areas, that he can recommend. I found my accountant through him. I enjoy working with him and others at this firm. They care about their clients.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Nashville, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
