When our son needed representation for basic fathers rights for his new born -2 week old daughter - there was no hesitation which law firm we would guide him to. Double blessed having Krysta Brown Trouy as lead attorney on his case. Krysta frankly gave him and me more knowledge of those rights than we expected from day one ! She laid out a plan ( 50/50 custody) that implemented fathers rights to the fullest and guided our son through the journey and has prevailed in every aspect! The firm is a Class Act. They continue to receive prestigious recognition’s and accomplishments . My impression is that my son is not just a client , but part on a team . Often consulting , helping and supporting each other when needed. Krysta’s leadership has been remarkable . Dail continues to keep the spot light on his firm with devoted attorneys like her . Krysta is more than a divorce attorney! More than an attorney! Her integrity, passionate heart and sincere demeanor makes this young lady something special.

Krysta was more then a lawyer to me! My divorce took 2 years and she supported me and helped through every step of the way. She gave me confidence to get through this hard time and take care of my daughter and myself. She had great advice and took control of the situation when needed. I would highly recommend Krysta to anyone needing services!

Hiring a divorce lawyer was the last thing I ever wanted to do. However, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience than I had with Krysta. She explained everything to me and even had a worksheet that me and my ex-husband could use to ensure we had gone over all the items needed for our agreed divorce. Despite all the issues COVID-19 presented, she still went out of her way to ensure this process was as painless for me as possible. I came away from this experience feeling like I had gained a friend instead of hiring a lawyer.

Krysta made my divorce manageable and while that may seem like a small thing, to me it was huge! No one can prepare you for a failed marriage, admitting defeat and your world being completely turned upside down! Krysta... while going through her own life and struggles was such a blessing to me! So very kind and supportive! She has seen me at my worse and has encouraged me to be my best! I am so thankful to this law firm and each staff member who helped me! Signed, sealed and delivered my dear friend!

Hiring Krysta Brown was the easiest decision in a situation riddled with hard decisions. If you’re considering an attorney, you’re likely already stressed, fearful, and emotional. Thanks to Krysta, my fears were put to ease after our first phone call and I had a clear direction of pricing, timeline, and next steps. No smoke and mirrors here. My case threw both of us a huge, unexpected curveball but Krysta acted swiftly and guided me through the new scenarios. Thanks to her I saved thousands of dollars and so much time. I hope I never have to again, but I would hire Krysta a second time without hesitation.

Mr. Judkins assisted me in winning a case in 6 months where a previous attorney that had had my case for over 2 years had failed and refused to carry on any further. He was very knowledgeable, thorough and communicated well with me. His entire staff was very professional and seemed glad to assist me at every turn. As this was a social security disability case he didn't stand to make a ton of money off his labors yet he worked as if he did. I would HIGHLY recommend him for whatever matters you may be needing assistance in.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Oak Ridge, Tennessee?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
